Idea for Afternoon

How about open-air ice-skating at Somerset House? It closes 26th Jan so it will still just about be open.
Plus points:
* It's a beautiful location
* We can all make fools of ourselves
* Those that refuse to skate can stay in the 'large viewing area' taking photos of everyone making fools of themselves or sit in the cafe.
* Good get-to-know-you activity.

Good idea?

It's an idea, although perhaps you should mention the cost. It's £9.50 for an hour, including the skate hire.
Also, we'd probably need to book in advance. The brochure strongly recommends this and as the h2g2ers would be a large group of people they may not be able to take us all.

*sits next to GB with 2 *
I used to skate a lot, but now I wouldn't dare take the risk of a fall or a collision.

Can I sit with you two please and drink ?
The last time I went ice skating, on a frozen lake in Newcastle (winter 1973) I fell and broke my wrist
Wonder how you skate with a wooden leg.............

I learnt to ice skate on a pond in Berlin in the 70s, didn't skate for nearly 20 years then went to our local rink. It was terrifying
*orders a hot *

Not a bad idea, but as Coelacanth says, it's pretty expensive and prompt booking would be needed, as it's only a relatively small rink and is almost always packed with tourists...

*remembers how cut up the ice got last year and looks sadly at knees*
but I never can resist skating.

What type of skates? speedskating or figures?

Hmm, I'm pretty reluctant to fork out another £100 to have my camera fixed again if I come a cropper on the ice. However, I might just have to exercise a bit of common sense and let the duck guard it.
Nice idea, though I wouldn't mind charging around Zone 1 and 2 again in the rain like last year

We are thinking of having three options for those who are attending in the afternoon because it is impossible for all 70 to go ice skating.
1) Ice skating followed by a trip to a coffee shop for hot chocolate.
2) A magical mystery tour of the Holborn area, finishing up at Sir John Soane's museum (A421372) for the culture vultures.
3) A board games tournament in a venue yet to be arranged.
What do you think?

Ooooo, culture tour of Olde Nodnol Towne
Board games could be cool too, as long as they don't take fifteen hours and end when a fight ensues over rules interpretations.

Hooray!
(however, I'll probably end up doing the tour and boring everyone senseless with my 'unofficial' observations about the area... )

"And here we have another fascinating pub outside which I have vomited. Let us venture inside, and sample the full fascinating range of beers within..."
Heh heh heh.
