Tea, Earl Gray, hot!
Captain Kebab Started conversation Aug 19, 2002
We'll be wanting something to eat with that. Anybody care to express any preferences? In my capacity as concert secretary, and person that knows where things are (especially things to eat), I can find us a variety of food.
We could have Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Mexican (I think), Tex Mex, burgers, kebabs, fish 'n chips - it all depends what peeps want.
Okay - cast your votes *stands back to avoid being crushed in the rush*

It doesn't have to be exclusively , it could serve as well . Just a thought, does the Peverill do food?

Nah, just at lunchtime I think. They've got table football though, which won't feed you but floats my boat, I have to say.
Here's my initial thoughts -
There's a Wetherspoons near the Peveril that does very reasonable grub (Wetherspoons are pretty reliable - it's not gourmet gear but it's decent and cheap) - it's called Paramount and it's on the corner of Portland St and Oxford St - diagonally opposite MacDonalds. You can download their menu at http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk - but there's not a huge choice of , or indeed - just plaice and cod from what I saw. Not a bad veggie choice, though, and there's steak and burgers and such for the carnivores.
It's pub grub, basically, but they cater for a pretty wide variety of tastes, they're inexpensive (I'd expect to average £8 a head, but they have some really cheap 2-for-1 deals too), you don't have to book and you can get a good pint in there. Cider is Strongbow, I think. And it's 2 minutes walk from the Peveril. My first feeling is that it would be a good all-round bet.
Best for the denizens of the deep would be Japanese, but it's expensive, which is a pity - I love Japanese food. I know of 4 Japanese restaurants in Manchester, they're all expensive - not everybody is going to want to pay £20 a head to eat. I don't.
There's a fair variety of fish dishes at the Chinese, I can check that out if you want (I don't really need to, I eat in Chinatown a lot), but is that what you mean? The Pan Asia was where we went last time, and seemed quite succesful. There's also Pacific, which is Thai, and very nice, similar sort of price to Pan Asia.
The Peking Court on Princess Street is a more traditional Chinese with a good reputation. I'm fairly confident (but would have to check) that they do an all-you-can-eat buffet on Saturday nights as well, for £6.95. My mate went a few weeks back - he's not in tomorrow, but I'll ask him on Thursday.
I've had their buffet for lunch and enjoyed it. Several times. Can't speak for the though - I always have with Chinese at lunchtime, I'm not allowed any alcohol when I'm working. No 1 Oriental buffet is what it sounds like - it's okay, but I don't rave about it.
I don't think that Indian restaurants are a good bet for fish. Kathmandu is a buffet style Indian (they call it Nepalese, but I'm told it's basicaly Indian) on the corner of Princess Street and Whitworth Street - I've never been but colleagues tell me it's good. Cheap, too - I think it's only about a fiver a head. I could try it on payday if there's any interest (dirty job but somebody has to do it).
Not sure how the Italians are for fish, but if people want Italian I think we should consider Don Giovannis, next door to the Odeon -it's very good. I'd expect to pay £10-£15 a head in there.
If you're after the real thing, well they do seared fillet of seabass with spiced cous cous, artichoke, tarragon and tomato at Simply Heathcotes. It sounds, and probably is gorgeous but it'll cost you and we'll never get in at this notice.
Then you've got MacDonalds, KFC, kebabs - whatever.
Anyone besides me and Granny hungry?

I can certainly vouch for the variety and value-for-money of Wetherspoons pub grub. Kathmandu sounds pretty good too, though. To hell with my diet - a h2g2 meet is a special occasion!
Oh, and Captain - I'll give you a game of table if we get the chance!

I'll go with the majority, I'm not veggie, but don't eat meat often. That Wetherstones sounds OK. Cheap & cheerful - now does that remind you of anyone?

I take it it's wavy spoons then - which is ok because we don't need to book it. Assuming we'll not be going there very late (I expect the museum will boot us out by six) there should be plenty of room for a pack of hungry researchers.
They not only have - they have real

mmmmm real ..
the food was lush. I had a 10oz well done (read as burnt to a crisp) steak with chips, onions rings, pepper sauce and a token bit of salad and it was only £5.99. Bargain. Really nice too.

Ah the token bit of salad for the major carnivore. Can't do without it on the plate myself
The food I had was good and the pudding was mightly grand too

Not as impressive as that fudge - blimey - I fancied a portion but I couldn't face it. I reckon I'd have done a Mr Creosote impression if I had tried it.
The burger I had was excellent, though - and the pancakes.
