New Jaguar record!
oldfogey Posted Sep 1, 2002
Hi !
Well...
Here are a few thoughts...
More than 100,000 copies of Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar" were sold worldwide during its first weekend, setting a new record for Mac OS sales for a single weekend.
Any of you got it yet? The forums are busy with problems, and I don't see too many 'helpers' in there, apart from our favourite lady (sailor?) in the fishnet stockings

um, Michael?
fark, why can't you just pick one of the numbers and leave it at that? I hate guessing games, that's why I don't use windows (except at work). yeesh! what do I hafta do to get somewhere in this pool of frozen corn syrup and marshmallows?

more than 100 000 maniacs on the loose around the world.
haven't got it yet... waiting until Christmas or thereabouts... at least until there's a couple of updates out. if anyone out there has it, do items stay in place when you choose "arrange by name" in icon view? it's really cheesing me off.

Why do you use icon view? I've got used to the column view - two windows nearly half the screen each, and you can shuffle stuff around to your heart's content.
No icons on the desktop (except d/ls which I haven't yet decide what to do with) and rather than close windows I just minimise to the dock - that way they come back just the same - should work just as well with icon view.
Hey! this isn't supposed to be a technical thread

um, I'm not entirely sure, but column view just doesn't appeal to me. I was sort of hoping that it would magically fix itself one day, but I guess not...
I have nothing on my desktop (most of the time I use this thing w/o finder even running) either. I have a lot of stuff (almost everything) in my dock and if it gets any smaller, I'll have to turn on magnification which will slow things down a bit.
this is me whining, not being technical.

I must remember that I'm 6 hours ahead of Apple forum time and get myself to bed earlier Still it was fun last night
I know what you mean, FW. A doesn't quite cut it, does it? The was the nearest I could find. I'm glad you're a piranha and not a shark though - they're fresh-water fish aren't they! (Oh dear, yet another FW ) So I've got a whole ocean to protect me!
What do you mean, you don't even have the finder running? That's not possible.... is it?

Yes - but when you've got it just so, use the minimise button rather than close. I know, that's yet another thingy in the dock ...
You know, all the things people moan about on the forums just don't seem to bother me! Whether I unconciously work around them or not, I don't know. When I see all these 'Can't empty trash' messages, my reaction is wonderment - 'How the h*ll did you manage that?'
I've got an Alcatel USB ADSL modem that I've used for 4 months with no problems at all, except a couple of kernel panics when I was setting it up. But the number of complaints from others, not just in the Apple forums, would make you think that they crashed every five minutes I've replaced mine with a router only because I want to connect 2 Macs, plus my daughter can plug her laptop in without kickin me off!
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash

Hi !
Thanks for answering so soon !

Wiping everything and starting over isn't the only solution and we try to avoid it as much as possible. However, in your case, we try to determine if your problem is hardware- or software- related....
why can't I get these tags to work?
Well serves me right for being so smug! :-(

I reeeeally asked for it didn't I?
My system won't recognise my admin password or my root password! I've been playing about on my 8.1 machine trying to get it to talk to my iBook through a router. Both machines could talk to the Internet (in fact I was on the Apple Forums twice but it just got too confusing - visions of TWO Mimis appearing - don't even go there ). The iBook could talk to the 8.1, too. Anyway I succeeded in getting 8.1 to talk to the iBook, which for some reason involved re-entering passwords (?), and then wham! no passwords recognised on the iBook.
I was just about to hit the power key and go find the instal disk when Norton Live Update pops up and proceeds to load this month's virus definitions - oh no, I'll need a password for this. But I put the password in anyway, and it worked!
So the iBook has _partially_ forgotten my passwords? Who does it think it is?

I'm back
Very strange. I could log out and in again - with a blank password. But Terminal was having none of that for 'sudo'. Netinfo let me edit my password (not asking for an admin password because it was blank, so I edited root's as well. Then I thought a reboot might shake up Terminal (yeah I know - illogical, but all of this is ). Wrong!! Now I couldn't log in at all, except as my daughter who doesn't have a password nor admin privs. So I had to get out the instal disk after all - and then realised I didn't _actually_ know how to do it! Luckily I could get onto the Apple forum via my 8.1 machine!
But somewhere along the line all my machines are talking to each other again, so all is not lost, except that they are all called 'thisaddressdoesnotexist'!
Which is where I started all this !!@**!! nonsense!
Now my brain really hurts...
