I've just skimmed through the entry atm, will be back later for a good look.
You have missed of the most important web promotion technique - takes about 2 minutes to do, and lasts forever. Put in on your emails as a signature. Then it is promoted everytime you send an email, or post to a newsgroup.
If it's a personal page that you are trying to promote, the giving and receiving of 'awards' can do quite well, particularly if you don't hand them out to all and sundry, and only request them from really good sites.
One more thing - Meta tags - are they still around? They help the search engine to rate your site. But my own page was written about 4 years ago, so things might have moved on.

Hi Linda, look forward to your in-depth comments
By the way, the sig file thing is in there but cunningly hidden. I built my site over two years ago too so much of what I say may also be out of date.
I have done the awards thing but looking at the site stats showed me that they weren't being particularly effictive in generating traffic. They do, however, look nice when the visitor gets there and there is a certain cachet to them which might lend the site a little more 'weight'. I shall have to think about that.
Thing is, of course, eleven top tips sounds so, well, naff
Oh, one more thing. If you were to search for a similar article on the web, you would find one that is almost verbatim (except written in the first person). That was written by me ages ago and I've re-worked it for a guide entry. Hope that's within the rules.
Cheers

That's what I get for skimming then entry, I miss something that was already in there - sorry! My in depth read was going to be for spelling etc, but as you have already had this published, then I can see that's not going to be a problem.
After being tempted, I did search the net and found your article, it's no problem, and not against the rules.
I look forward to seeing this in the Edited Guide.

Many thanks. But, tell me. What happens next? I've read the blurb and everything but I am a newbie here and have had my work reviewed by scouts who said they liked it. Does that mean it gets sent to editors or just that the scouts like it.
I'm easily confused..

You have to wait for a Scout to 'pick' your entry for inclusion in the Edited Guide. They can pick it once it has been in Peer Review for a week, but that's not guarentee that it will be, even if it's a fantasically good entry, and is ready. I know that as I have two that have been ready for weeks, and have simply not been noticed by a Scout.
But keep your chin up, that probably won't happen to you.

But you're a sub! (as I aspire to be )
surely, you don't need to wait for a scout if you like an entry?

And the conversation about the piece is even more of a laugh (if you can be bothered to wade through it)

And I'm not pissed at all. Not a bit. Nor was I when I wrote any of that other stuff. Any suggestion that I am will be, erm, utterly butterly. No, that's not what I meant a tall.
Ooh, er.

I have read some of the conversation, but I was keeping well clear of the entry to be perfectly honest. I'm not keen on these medical personal perspective entries.
The staff have to stick to the rules, like everyone else (or at least, it has to look like it ), so I can't pick for you, sorry! If I could pick, I'd have grabbed my two!!
And I am a sub, but not a regular one. I pick and choose. Now that *is* something I'm happy to do.

Congratulations - Your Entry has been Picked for the Edited Guide!
h2g2 auto-messages Posted Jul 2, 2002
Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Thanks guys . I didn't have a speech prepared or anything I never expected... . Well I just want to thank everybody that has ever breathed that same atmosphere. It could never have happened without the support of my legs.
