Another great entry!

It's years since I was in Heraklion, but I remember it as a very interesting place. I think you've got that across very well.

A very good entry, Gnomon, reflecting once again your evident keen interest in this fascinating part of the world.

smiley - erm Some of your internal links don't work yet because you need to insert the A smiley - doh

You have linked twice to your Minoan entry, so one of these links is redundant.

There are a couple of typos, which I'm sure you'll spot when you re-read.

It would have been nice to have a little snippet of info on some possibly unfamiliar terms. Eg: Saki (Munro?), Saracens, Byzantine, Crusader. My A753581 Thessaloniki may be of some help, so do feel free to crib from there if you want.

Worth mentioning that Megalokastro = big castle?

"Iraklion, meaning City of smiley - ermIrakllissmiley - erm (Hercules), after the port of Heracleum" Are you sure about this? I thought it was named after Heraclius, the Byz emperor 610-641. But maybe not...

"the Cretan politician, Eleftherios Venizelos, who united Crete and Greece" Worth mentioning that this 'ubiquitous' personage is from comparatively modern times - late 19C/early 20 C.
He took a leading part in the Cretan rising against the Turks in 1896. At the outbreak of WWI he supported France and Britain, thereby clashing with King Constantine I. Veniz established a provisional rival govt. @ Thessaloniki and forced the abdication of Constantine in 1917.

1866 street - mention the significance of this date? See info at, eg, http://www.onwar.com/aced/data/cite/crete1866.htm

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

I totally agree - a great entry, Gnomon!

Just one little question - 'Khandak' - I have a memory from when I was there that it was called Candia - are the two the same, ie is Candia a variant of Khandak?

ZSF, I explain the point about Khandak and Candia in the entry. The Saracens called it Khandak. The Venetians transformed the name into Candia which was easier to say in their language.

Thanks, Bels, for all those points:

I've fixed the links.
I've added a footnote about Saki.
I'll think about adding more info on 1866 Street, Venizelos, the Saracens, Byzantines, Crusaders and Megalokastro.

OK, I've explained 1866 Street, Megalokastro, Venizelos and the Saracens. I'm not going to go into an explanation of the Crusaders. I only mentioned them in passing.

I'm not 100% sure about the origin of the name, but I've certainly seen the explanation I've given in a few different places.

Hey Gnomon,

This is a great entry and one that brings back very fond memories...

The only suggestion I have is to unbold the place names towards the end. Other than that smiley - ok

The entry is Guide-bound - really liked it - brought back memories too of when I went on a cruise round all these Greek Islands with my Dad - he was working on the boat at the time and I got to go free of charge. Ahhhh... those were the days. smiley - smiley

Just one small problem: one sentence starts with 'Since As'. This should be either 'Since' or 'As'. Take your pick.
