A Conversation for Talking Point: What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I grow up? If I grow up!

I started off wanting to raise show collies. I'm allergic to dogs, so that wouldn't have been a very wise choice. I moved on to oceanographer, then stewardess (women weren't encouraged to be pilots in those days), and finally settled on being an artist when I was in the 9th grade. I then took all the art classes I could, to find out what aspect of art I was best at. I found I got the highest grades, and had the most fun, doing advertising, so that's what I decided to do. I studied it in college, and have been doing it professionally for 20+ years. In the last 3 years, I've switched to web page design (which is just another form of the same sort of work), and I still love doing it. I've watched the industry change, and changed myself, from pasteup by hand with rubber cement, to the use of massive $60,000 computers, to the first use of personal computers in desktop publishing, to what we use today. I've continued teaching myself, and made the decision to return to college to earn a higher degree in Visual Communications ... so I'm still learning ... which keeps it fresh and exciting.

Along the way, I took fine art classes, and that's where I fell in love with paiting. Unfortunately, I don't have much time for it, and have never lived in a place where I had room for a studio. Painting is what I love the best, though. My "Lotto Dream" is being able to quit work, and spend all my time painting. That won't happen until retirement time, and I just pray that my hands and eyesight hold up so I can realize my dream. smiley - smiley

My parents encouraged my career choice, but my mother later admitted to me that if I had been a boy, they would have discouraged my choice. She said that a man couldn't make enough money as an artist to support himself and a family, and a woman didn't have to worry about that. Little did she know I'd be supporting myself, and end up making rather decent pay anyway! Oh, the good old days. smiley - tongueout

I would argue that to say that you have grown up is to admit defeat - to become a lackie of the system

I never know what will happen next- thousands of opportunities lie before me as they always have.

At present I work as a computer programmer which I hate - before I was a calf rearer on a kibbutz - which I loved - I'll start again and do a PGCE and become a teacher - maybe I'll enjoy that more - or maybe I wont

Is there such a thing as growing up ? I'm 40 in october and still havent.

Hi Researcher 194437! smiley - smiley Just to let you know, there isn't a chat room connected to h2g2, which is why you can't get into it.

And Hi Researcher 196097! smiley - smiley I'm going to be 42 in October, and would be very disappointed in myself if I started growing up at this time of life! smiley - winkeye

And to let you both know, you can hit the "Preferences" button on your homepage (My Space) to change your name, and if you leave a message on your homepage, people can then leave messages for you! It's a great way to start getting to know people! smiley - smiley
