Franz Beckenbauer won the football World Cup as a player, with the West German team of 1974. He then managed the West German team that won the World Cup in 1990. More recently he persuaded FIFA, the world football governing body, to stage the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He's the chairman of the committee that's already planning that tournament. He also played in a club side that were European Champions three years in succession.

This is his story.

Thanks, WD! I mentioned this entry in another thread, and someone who seems to quite like replied 'Who is Franz Beckenbauer?' Suddenly, I knew that I needed to make the title a bit catchier!

God, that made me feel old...

Has anyone ever heard him say anything in an interview or so? Er, I, er, I mean it's, er, somewhat hard to, er, listen to him because, er, of some, er, weird noises that are, er, interleaved into, er, whatever he says.

Great work Ormy but I think it's somewhat hard to find the 'Beckenbauer' bits among all the goals and Cups. IMHO, less would be more here.

I was a bit concerned that the entry might have too many lists of results and goal times , and I've tried to fix that by taking out some of the non-essential details about the tournaments Beckenbauer played in. I think it's a bit more tightly edited and focused on Franz now. I hope you agree!

No, I haven't heard the great man interviewed lately. But let's face it, being unable to speak properly has always been the fashion for stars!

I've added some more quotes from Herr Beckenbauer, and deleted more sections that simply reported football results. I hope this entry is now an easier resd!
