Smudger, they are everywhere.
Restaurant (well, sort of "Greasy Spoon" rather) - landlady knew her customers.
Rectangular wine (the cheapest stuff sold in paper cartons), served in a good carafe.
She would look for someone drinking to tell him "nice you enjoy that - it takes more money to afford quality"

Aye! thanks for your post, it was one of those things where...."you had to be there" as they say
Personally, I have never like wine, more of a man myself, that and of course Tiger lager when out East

Smudger, people getting elevated above their post...my bet is you have seen lots of tinsel on shoulders with a vacuum in between during your navy days.

Aye! and when I was taxi driving, I used to pick up folk who were going to golf club does, and the like, and they were all airs and graces, but when I went back to pick them up, and they had a few drinks in them, you would see the real people....
Also saw that when I was on Yacht, when HM had those banquets on board, and we had to ferry all the guests, sometimes 1200 of them, back and fore
Smudger.
