A739550 - An introduction to Chakras
Lighthousegirl - back on board Posted May 26, 2002
Thank you again for all your comments - I found them most helpful.
I have made some changes based on them but still need to address the question of how to balance Chackras. I am wondering if this would be better written as a seperate entry?
Zarquon's Singing Fish obviously knows more about the visualisation methods than I do - I use a crystal on a chain. I am about to be off line for a while - possibly about three weeks and will work on this on my return
What do you think?

Well, I think it still needs something in the introduction telling more about which 'Eastern' culture we're talking about. The phrases: 'ancient Eastern beliefs and thinking', 'Eastern esoteric teaching', 'Eastern thinking' and 'Eastern teaching' make me think Chakra theory originated in Massachusetts, and that the Kennedys were probably involved (hence 'esoteric' ).
According to (the abandoned) A447400, which Spaceman Spiff linked to earlier in this thread, the connection is Hindu - and the Sanskrit etymologies seem to hint in this direction too. I think it would make a lot of sense to say so in the entry. As it stands now, you're implying that all Eastern cultures are the same, and all share the same teachings, which is just not true.
Also according to that entry, the Chakra system is connected to the endocrine system. Is this true? Isn't it worth mentioning? This is related to the question that I asked on the last page of this thread, which I could rephrase: Is there any point of contact between teachings about the Chakra system and the Western (Euro-American) scientific understanding of Medicine? I would hope that there is.
Riffing off that last point, I feel very strongly that you should say *something* to the substatial number of readers who will ask questions like, "How do we know that Chakras really exist?" and "What is this 'subtle-energy'? Is it the same kind of 'energy' I learned about in my Physics class?" As it stands, you're just assuming that all of your readers will agree that Chakras are completely valid and real, when that's actually controversial.
I think the answer to skeptics is that, although there is not yet a fusion of 'western science' and ideas about the Chakra system, there is a good deal of evidence that the techniques for manipulating 'life-energy' through 'chakras' really seem to bring about the desired results of health, well-being, etc.
Additionally, if anybody is working on such a fusion of east and west, I would love to hear about it. A quick Google search didn't turn anything up, unfortunately.
I could certainly see 'How to Balance Chakras' being a separate entry from 'An Introduction to Chakras'. Otherwise, the entry could get uncomfortably long.
Have a good time offline, and keep up the great work!

Hellow One and All,
Just dropping by to let y'all know that this entry has been scouted, but it needs a little more work as suggested by GTB before we can accept it for subediting.
I'll keep an eye on this Conversation and process the pick when the piece has been updated.
Thanks for a great entry.

If you want some input on chakra balancing, lighthousegirl, just ask. I've already made suggestions on two (or was it three) of the chakras.
I suspect that there are undoubtedly more ways than this, but it would give an option.
I can remember going to a group and doing work with chakras with pendulums (pendula?), however, they were only used to check the end result of the balancing.

You have mixed up the Root Chakra with the Sacral Chakra. The Root (Muladhara) Chakra is the one linked to the sex organs (also the anus, perineum and bladder). It is also the seat of Kundalini, the spiritual and cosmic energy of the species. The symbols of this chakra are the lingam (male organ) and yoni (female organ) The yoni is represented by a triangle (with the point down) with the lingam inside the tiangle (also pointing down). The lingam represents the cosmic male (Shiva) and the yoni, the cosmic female (Shakti). Around the triangle is a four leaf lotus with red petals. To energise the chakra, close your eyes and visualise the coresponding colour. Then place your hands over your eyes and visualise the colour flowing into your palms. Next place both hands over the chakra area down the front of your body and again visualise the colour flowing from your palms into your body, directing the colour to the spinal chakra point.

* waves * Hello Ashley How exciting! This is my first entry and to have it scouted already
Thank you all for your input - As I mentioned earlier I am not going to get much time to work on this for a while as I will not be on line - however I am a copy of your comments taking your comments and the entry with me so hopefully (w**k permitting) I can work on it for my return.
My initial thoughts are that a quick overview of balancing Chakras is enough for this entry and then Zarquons Singing Fish - how about we do a join piece on Balancing Chakras - I think all in one entry would be too long
GT Bacchus my appologies for not addressing your points and the points you hightlight in the last re write - I accept them and just did not get time to incorporate them yet
Alii Wizzard - thanks too
Roll on less RL and the time to finish this off ...
I will as they say - be back

I second what Bels said. I think some mention of how Chakras compare to western medicine's notions of energy flow is necessary to make this be even handed, per Writing Guidelines.
