Sometimes the old ways are best

As mentioned elsewhere, bike just failed the MOT on front wheel bearings. Should have noticed myself really, bit too keen to get it MOTd I think and skimped on checks. Ah well. Anyway, after taking the wheel out and the axle out I was left puzzling how to remove the dust covers and bearings.

Take it easy I thought. Don't want to break anything I thought. Look at it carefully, work out what goes where. Nope, can't see anything obvious and won't just pull out. Hmm. Check manual. Manual shows no threads, no circlips, nothing. Look at it again. Ah. Press fit.

Get out big hammer and handy item to substitute as a drift and wallop it several times, each side. Plunk. Out come the bearings.

10yrs ago I'd have just walloped it anyway and saved myself 20mins or so faffing. Ah well.

20 minutes of faffing is worth it just to make sure you dont break anything!

well, I guess. And having completely bodged the alloy bearing ring retaining nut on a cb550 in my past by using the 'bash it with something big' approach I did not wish to repeat that. Still narked that 'bash it with something big' was actually the right answer in this case though!
