Turbochargers anyone?
Shaunak - who loves to swim in chilly water Started conversation Apr 29, 2002
Anyone here turbocharged their own bike? I've searched quite a lot but I haven't come across any motorcycle which had been turbocharged.
I'm thinking of turbocharging my bike (a 150cc Suzuki Fiero) as my final year project (Bachelors, Mechanical Engg.)
Anyone done this before?
Cheers,
Shaunak.

No, I've never done that - good luck and let us know how it goes!!!
Are you interested in joining the club?
I was just reading about someone who turbocharged their Zeal 250! Gets away from R6s - has a huge jump in power (triples)!!!

No turbocharging for me. However I did hear that if you get the engine block skimmed top and bottom then you can rebuild it without gaskets. This decreases the high of the cylinders by a very small amount (two gaskets worth) and therefore increases the compression and therefore torque. Not done it myself but sounds feasable.
Good luck.

I'd love it.
Turbocharging, in addition to increasing power, also cleans up your emissions and arguably improves your fuel economy.
But I haven't done a PhD on Gas cycles, so don't take my word for everything - not yet
Ofcourse I'll keep you posted.
It's quite far away yet, a year before I start building the thing(second year now - proj in fourth year), but I'm starting the theoretical stuff right now. Well, next month after my finals
Cheers,
Shaunak.

It would improve compression a bit but I wouldn't recommend it.
Gaskets serve an important purpose - sealing the combustion chambers. Removing them would give rise to leakage (if not now, sometime later) thus decreasing efficiency.
Turbocharging OTOH is perfectly suited for these purposes.
You're running a turbine on your exhausts.
This turbine runs a compressor which delivers compressed air to the engine. This improves power and performance a LOT.

Shaunak.

Some manufacturers have released Turbo-charged bikes...years ago, so it obviously is very feasible.
As for not using gaskets, Triumph motorcycles were originally built that way.

"As for not using gaskets, Triumph motorcycles were originally built that way. "
I can't see another solution for doing this except having really good surface tolerance for both the surfaces.
But pay not much attention to my statements - I'm still learning

Tis true, prior to 1967 Triumphs were engineered to perfection and the surfaces met without gaskets...Thus why most pre-unit trumpy's mark their spot.

I did not know that PR. Learn something new every day...

What sort of virtual bike would you be riding?

Virtual bike?
I haven't been following the "drool" scene with ref. bikes for quite a while so I can't say 'which' bike.
What I could tell you is what kind of a bike I'd like to ride.
Definitely not a chopper.
Probably a sports bike.
500cc, four stroke, turbo charged (and I do mean CHARGED) bike.
(Yes, 500cc is enough for me).
Tyres and suspension that make it stick to the road like roadkill.
Steers like a feather, not too heavy, not too light.
Everything else is just a distraction.
Oh, and it MUST seat two
Shaunak.
