The pictures are interesting, but scroll down for the article,
particularly the parts about the beheadings and the garrotings.

Cheers mate!
Much appreciated.
This 'subject' has a strange and strong appeal for me. The myth is based on various pagan beliefs and holds the key to the mystery of several earthbound realities. The prospect of discovering the naked Truth is more than a little scary.
Our connection to the earth has been fudged by the invasive eastern religions (eg: the Roman Church) and yet the myth still holds an un-named place in the darkest corners of our pagan minds. No one seems to know the whole story but fragments and variations are pervasive once you start looking for it.
I suspect there is a hideously raw and awful truth in this pagan lore, hidden from our modern viewpoint and civilised sensibilities, the way barnyard murder is now done in an industrial slaughterhouse and called 'meat processing'.
All your offered suggestions will help to expand my knowledge of the mystery, but I must warn you that I may never be able to come to grips with this huge subject. I hope your interest in the project will not be disappointed if I fail to piece together a satisfactory Entry. But tearing the mask off the Jolly Green Giant may be more than my faint heart can handle.
I'll say more when I've absorbed them all. And again, thanks.
peace

Zarquon's Singing Fish says there is something about it in her currently being subbed entry about the "something" Sweeps (medford?).
She has an intense interest in the subject.
I am interested in anything that will keep some of the mysteries of the ancient Celts and others from the prying eyes of the modrin mundanes. I think the true magic to be found today is in the fact that we will never know the true extent of the interconnectedness of the ancient world and that protects it from the academics and us.
Did you notice that there is no Maypole at Hogwarts?
But there is in "The Wicker Man"!

Wow. Massive links. Lotsa info and pix. Thanks TR.
I am still distilling it all.
I feel now that I will probably refrain from offering much more than a intro to all the external links and let people absorb the essence as they will. That link from ZarqFS is to a guy who has been chasing this mystery for more than 20 years. His site covers everything all the others have and more, and it's a more cohesive and prettier site.
I doubt I'll have anything more to add myself, other than an enthusiastic invitation to follow these and other internal h2g2 links I had gathered. This one subject will probably fill the issue and all we need now is an h2g2 link to a Robin Hood Entry.
Is the Jolly Green Giant brand name still used in the USA?
And do you remember any 'scarecrow' or 'jack o'lantern' or 'straw man' from your cultural heritage that might in any way be a transplanted remnant of the old myth?

Sooo many of them, and you've yet to mention *THE* green man: Joschka Fischer, head of the Green Party and Germany's minister of foreign affairs (that'll be Secretary of State in the USA, I think)

I was.
And as soon as I had hit send I realised I was stooping to gossip about third parties, a despicable behavior. The follow-up post was disorganised, obscurant back-pedalling.
While my intention was a devise, an attempt to get to know you better, by opening a dialog based on a passing prior knowledge of your NY visit, my method was thoughtlessly inconsiderate and generally reprehensible.
despicably yours,
~jwf~
And while I am normally not concerned about such things, this thread is attached to a very public and topical forum currently publicised in today's h2g2Post and is not the place for us to continue. If we are going to gossip, we should do it elsewhere.

umm, err... I'm not embarrassed or whatever you might be assuming! The NYC postings are there fore everyone to see, so what. 'Get to know me better'... have you seen the 'Bosselish' section of my space? That'll teach you something, I guess
Key: Complain about this post
