Blood Oranges
Created | Updated Mar 20, 2013
A variety of orange, grown primarily in the Mediterranean. Blood oranges are so named because of the deep reddish colour of their rind and flesh and often look like something HP Lovecraft would have catalogued had he been a botanist. They are quite pleasant to taste, being slightly more tart than regular oranges, proving that just because something looks disgusting doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't eat it. This is not a rule that should be blindly generalised.
Cutting a blood orange open can be tricky, mostly because no matter how careful you are, the immediate impression of onlookers is that you've sliced your thumb off.
