Entry: The Pennsylvania Dutch - A701137
Author: Jimi X - U53353

This entry tries to describe the Pennsylvania Dutch in broad terms.

My mother's family are all 'Dutchies' and I reckon its time the Guide learned about this important cultural group!

A charming, informative and affectionate piece.

Religious overtures? Or overtones, even!

Hop pillows still seem to be quite widely available, though I don't know what they are supposed to do for you. Buckwheat pillows, however, are a different matter. They are definitely recommended for certain respiratory conditions, because they provide firm head support during sleep, helping with airway problems and even some causes of snoring.

A fascinating Entry.

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

I bought a hop pillow recently for someone. The're meant to ensure restful nights and are good for respiratory problems.

Nice entry, Jimi!smiley - ok

Thanks everybody!

I've asked my mom for more Penna Dutch superstitions for New Years - only having the one seems a bit weak. But it *is* the biggest one...

...I've never celebrated New Year's Day without pork and sauerkraut.

I'm kind of hoping some of our German Researchers take a look at this and give their feedback since it's about an enclave of Pennsylvanians clinging to their Germanic roots.

Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Jimi! Another great entry.

I find your footnotes confusing. Perhaps you would:

Move the first footnote into the main text.
Move the position of the second footnote to after the word German in the same sentence.

There are some typos and bits I'm not sure of:

leader Francis --> leader, Francis
palette --> palate
overtures --> overtones
publically --> publicly
have nothing to the Plain People -- I don't understand this. Is there a word left out?

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Hi Jimi!

Couldn't resist - fastnachts to chow-chow, hogsmau, scrapple, and red beet eggs - give me a clue, even a small one!

I can see further entries here, but it would be nice to have at least an idea of what they are (apart from cuisine).

(Fastnachts - something to do with feast nights? Chow-chow sounds Chinese. Hogsmau = pigs mouth? Scrapple smiley - huh. Red beet eggs = dyed eggs?)

There's an entry in PR right now about Fastnachts.

Chow chow are pickled vegetables
Hogsmau is a pig's stomach stuffed with sausage, potatoes and spices
Scraple is pig 'parts' and cornmeal that is molded into patties and fried (usually for breakfast)
Red beet eggs are hard boiled eggs that are pickled in the juices of pickled red beets.

I *am* planning on writing those entries within the next few months...

smiley - run - looks at the Fastnach entry. Still wonder about the exact translation. Pretty calorific though.

Pigs 'parts' = nadgers? (or I suppose it could just be offal)

So I was almost right about the red beet eggssmiley - smiley.

I'll definitely look forward to entries on these. When I was in the US, pretty much the only decent food I had was in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Thank goodness I wasn't a veggie then!

Hi, Jimi!

This looks like another great Pennsylvania entry (it's definitely the most thoroughly covered area in the Guide!)

You have a typo for 'equivalent' in the table, but that's the only one I saw.

It looks all set for the Edited Guide!

Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Jimi! I'm surprised to see this is still here. Since it is, I will make one more comment. There are too many very short paragraphs in the first section. I think it would read better if you didn't make each sentence a separate paragraph. Well, almost.
