A worrying recent trend in zombie proliferation is that signs of rudimentary intelligence have been seen in the undead. Some observers have characterised this as being a sign of zombie 'evolution'.
This has led to swarms of zombies being directed by 'alpha zombies', who have demonstrated the ability to reason and adapt to obstacles such as electric fences or rivers. These zombies have also been seen to use tools and weapons such as machetes, pneumatic drills, petroleum and even, in one notable case, a handgun.
It is a development with grave implications for human survivors.
