Peter Benchley has stated, for the record and in several interviews, *exactly* what inspired him to write Jaws. There's no need for anyone to postulate or believe what it might or might not have been.

You seem to have sorted most of my points However, there are still some inconsistancies between metric and imperial measurements - in some places you have metric (imperial) and in some places it's the other way around.

The story was *based* on the 1916 attacks but not inspired by them - it was something else that fired up his imagination to write the book in the first place.
