Acturaies make a living by analysing statistics. Insurers charge women less for insurance because the actuaries say women are safer drivers.
Of course, most women can't park. I have often wondered why this is, and conclude that it's because they are on average shorter (hence less able to see the corners of the vehicle from the driving seat) and because, as a great deal of research has show, men have generally better spatial perception.
Men generally drive worse because we are too competitive. We see the roads as an arena with us as gladiators, winning if we get through the lights ahead of that idiot in the BMW.
One for the blokes: set yourself a challenge to drive for three weeks entirely within the speed limits and other traffic laws (yellow lines, disabled spaces etc). Especially round town. See how much more you notice about what's going on around you, and how often the traffic ahead has melted away by the time you get there.

I live in Seattle, the place where most folks have always waited for the cross walk light to change before ambling to the far corner. In recent years, the rolling stop, or as it is some times known, the California stop, has been increasing in popularity. Since the driver approaching the intersection can see the rolling stop in progress it slows traffic flow for every one, as the approaching driver slows to find out if it is in fact a rolling stop or a rolling through. This particular style of vehicular operation is viewed by many as the ultimate inconsiderate combination of both aggrissive driving and lazy driving. I have noted no preponderance of gender in the drivers executing this splendid act of lame self absorbtion. My theory is that in our overtly "monitor screen," ie, tv, 'puter, video game etc screen, society, the automobile windshield is experianced by the driver as a viewing surface detached from the reality of the world on the other side of the glass.

The windscreen=TV point is a good one, and I will now steal it.
