Hi, Cal!

This is an excellent entry, with a nice mix of background as well as the actual recipes. smiley - applause Well done!

There' just one point I would query, and that's this section:

"It is thought that parkin dates back to well before before 1605 and the Gunpowder Plot. In fact it is has been dated to Viking times. The Vikings celebrated the Feast of Thor (Thor being the God of Thunder) with bonfires and something which was called a 'Thar cake'. This, like the early parkin, was baked on a stone heated by the fire.

Another type of Parkin called Thar or Tharf cake is made in South Yorksire, Lancashire and Derbyshire. Parkin is often referred to as treacle parkin."

Saying that parkin has been dated back to the Vikings is a bit misleading, if it's specifically the Thar cake that seems to be traceable. What struck me particularly is that treacle/molasses/syrup have only been available since the Caribbean plantations were set up in the 17th century, so anything depending on the properties of treacle rather than honey can't date back to the Vikings.

I think you should change those two paragraphs around a bit to make it clear that it's the Tharf cake that may date back to Viking times, rather than treacle parkin.

Apology accepted Cal. Knowing you as I do (albeit relatively little), I figured there must be a reason.

smiley - erm Thar cake is a form of parkin though, the thar cake made today is in fact excatly the same, it's just called thar cake in some parts of south yorkshire (as far as I know you have to make thar cake yourself as I've never seen it available in the shops)

I'm finding this confusing:
"In Derbyshire there used to be Tharf cake joinings, everyone would save money for the making of the cakes that were eaten in November. They would then take it in turns to visit each man's house once a year where the feast would take place"

Firstly, what feast? Was there more to the joining than just the cake?

Secondly, do you mean that the feast was held at each person's house in turn and that the whole town or village went there for it?

yes thats what I mean, and it was a feast of cakes, they all gave money for the cakes to be made

I think it could explained more clearly in that case. How about something along these lines:

'In Derbyshire there used to be a tradition called Tharf cake 'joining'. Throughout the year, neighbours would all contribute money towards the ingredients for making the cakes that were eaten in November. The joining itself was held at a different home each year so that everyone took a turn in hosting the feast. It was sometimes customary to keep a bit of the cake from one year to the next.'

Right, we're nearly there I reckon.

"In fact it is has been dated to Viking times"
'In fact it has been dated to Viking times'

When I click on the Yorkshire link I get a h2g2 error page saying 'Bad Request'. Can you check you've got the A number right? It also doesn't show up in the entry data box, although the Oats entry doesn't show up there either but that link seems okay. It looks like you've got a line break in the GuideML for the oats entry link here:

I copied that directly from <./>test6768372</.>. Try taking the line break out and see if the link turns up in the data box.

Ah, there's a comma here that needs to come out:
Yorkshire,
Maybe that will fix the Yorkshire link, maybe not.

Okay. Yorkshire's working now but you've still got the line break in the oats link

Just put your cursor to the left of the double quote and backspace until it joins the A number, like this

I gotta be picky about this one seeing as how it's my entry you're linking to smiley - winkeye

Quote from PR page:

"How Long Before Your Entry Gets Picked?

The short answer is... nobody knows! Some Scouts specialise in picking entries that have been in Peer Review for a long time, some like to pick those which are more recent, and others manage to pick from throughout Peer Review. If you have made all the changes suggested by other Researchers - well, those you agree with! - then hopefully your entry will be picked sooner rather than later. The wait can be anything from a week to months; it all depends on those picking."

If there's no more suggestions, it's just a matter of waiting now Cal smiley - oksmiley - smiley
