Redundancy - What to do

My advice is really simple:
1. JOIN A RECOGNISED TRADE UNION
2. Read your contract of employment and the staff handbook/notice board to verify the contractual redundancy terms. (Yes they can be contractual - despite the fact that UK employment contract law is pretty iffy and still is based on the concept of "Master & servant")
3. GET ADVICE FROM YOUR UNION BRANCH OFFICERS OR FULL TIME OFFICIAL
4. check your rights on the ACAS & DTI web sites - loads of useful employment rights stuff here - I use these sights regularly and have been a union branch officer for 17 years, you never stop learning.
5. Reputable employers (i.e. 95%+ of all employers) will treat you fairly and reasonably, they don't like it any more than you do; it is demotivating even for those staff not affected, it can be disruptive, it can sour customer relations etc etc.
6. if in doubt about anything talk to YOUR UNION OFFICERS or the Citizens Advice Bureau.
7. Only involve a solicitor if they are experts in employment law - it is a minefield for the unaware & given most solicitors do little other than conveyencing and debt collection you probably know more about your rights than they do.
8. Finally JOIN A RECOGNISED TRADE UNION
