Abi's Community Column
Created | Updated Jul 11, 2003
Welcome to my new column. Firstly I have to say Happy Birthday to The
Post! Over the last two years it has grown and blossomed and it is a
pleasure to contribute to it. Well done to The Post Team and
everyone who has contributed to it.
One of the great things about h2g2 is the amazing range of creativity
that can be found throughout it. Not only in the Edited Guide, but in the
Community activities too. h2g2 has such a range of virtual worlds, clubs,
societies and campaigns. Every week I pick some of the best to feature as
Abi's Activities on the Talk page but this only allows me a sentence or two
to tell you about them. So what better place to talk about h2g2 hot spots
and cool areas, then in The Post?
Advent Quiz
Are you getting excited about Christmas? Are you counting down the days?
I know I am! A brilliant way of testing your knowledge of h2g2 and crossing
off the days until Christmas Day is to take part in the h2g2 Advent Quiz.
Ottox has created a virtual Advent Calendar.
Each day a window opens and a question is revealed. The answer is hidden
some where in the Guide and the first person to post the correct answer wins
a . So get hunting the Guide for those correct
answers!
Da Langwich Skool uv Noo Yawk
I am not much of a linguist, as any of the people in Paris I attempted to
communicate with will testify. Since I enrolled in Shea's fantastic Langwich Skool uv
Noo Yawk, I have had no such problems and confidently expect to be
able to make myself understood and be able to banter with the locals should
I ever go to New York.
The great thing is that because the teaching method is based on
phonetics, it is easy to pick up that authentic accent straight away! I
already sound like Cyndi Lauper and that is after one lesson!
The Pagan Page
h2g2 has Researchers of various religious bents and plenty of vocal
atheists too! Kaz has started a Pagan Page for those Researchers who have similar
beliefs. She herself is a Pagan Druid but she is very keen to hear from
anyone who follows a pagan path, be it Wiccan, Druid, Pagan or the Norse
Path.
h2g2 Pet Shop and the Fish Adoption Scheme
aka has started a Pet
Shop, which has lots of small and not so small furry animals looking
for good homes. Want love and affection? Why not opt for a ? If you are feeling brave why not opt for a or a ? I suggest you pop in and
see if you can offer a pet a home1.
If scaly fish suit you better then furry animals, why not visit the Fish Adoption Scheme and speak to Tummyfish. You can take home your chosen fish and
install him or her on your user page for all your fellow Researchers to
admire.
And finally...
It is traditional on British news programmes to finish off with a funny
little story. So I thought I would borrow the idea and let you know about a
rather bizarre case of burglary I came across yesterday.
The largest humbug in the world, weighing a hefty five stone and measuring
30cm long, was stolen from the offices of a digital auction channel called
Bid-up.TV. The sweet had been specially made for a charity auction to raise
money for the NSPCC, but despite a comprehensive search by the Metropolitan
Police it has not been found. You can read more about this more curious of
crimes here.
a virtual one, is for life and not just for Christmas.
