P.S. I know your comment was partly intended as a 'joke', Queex, although I've seen funnier....

It's my day off. Otherwise, you'd be up to your armpits in animated corpses, fighting off a debilitating disease.

Oh, the dead. I like them. Not the corpses... the spirits. They're funny.

I've not seen that yet, but I was just wowed today by the Light spell - or rather, the shadows it casts. Wow! Wow! Wow!

Y'know, Art, for a man of few words, your outpourings (seem to me to) contain much emotional content , as well as mere facts.

There was I, getting carried away following the conversation about RPG video FX, then I am reminded that not everyone eats, drinks and breathes the subtle nuances of role-play.
Fascinating.

So given recent news, what do you lot think about using genetically-engineered animals to provide organs for transplant to humans? Personally I think it would be much better if they could just grow the organ they want in a big vat from the patient's DNA, perhaps using a kind of generic one they keep a stock of as an alternative if there's not enough time to grow a custom one.

I find I am sharply constrained here by my conscience and/or morals:
The breeding of animals to provide humans with spare parts must not be permitted. Such a lack of respect and care epitomises all that is wrong
with our perspective on the world.
So that's me - sitting on the fence, as usual.

You may be upset to know that that's not sitting on the fence, that's a position of objection.

Also, how do we feel about using selectively bred animals to provide nutrients for consumption by humans? Is it really that different? It's just that one's been in practice for thousands of years and one hasn't, that's all. Give the concept of genetic manipulation a little more familiarity and see how the world feels about it *then.*
I hate to sound cruel or cold, but we *are* at the top of the food chain. I do agree with MaW that a big vat-o'-organs would be best, though. But right now it would be much simpler/easier for people to harvest organs from critters--perhaps the best way to encourage the vat is to forbid the usage of animals?

Maybe...
Although really, is it any different to using genetically-engineered bacteria to produce insulin and other substances vital for some people to survive?

Mild alcohol poisoning is almost completely indistinguishable from existential dread, I've noticed. But that's off-topic.
