Because the Peter Cushing films were:
1) re-makes of William Hartnell stories designed to get more people interested in Who (Hartell was to star in the films but the schedule for the TV series meant he couldn't).
2) made before the whole regeneration malarkey.

The Who confidential straight after the episode said that there are going to be more Daleks.
I enjoyed the episode, and will definately be watching it again. I loved the way Rose's sensitive side was brought out by the captured Dalek, and she didn't have a clue what it was, marvellous.
I'm SO impressed with this series I'm going to buy the DVD so I can watch it through at my leisure and enjoy the bits I missed.
The alien museum story was a rehash of TNG's "The Most Toys" - it's a good story and although not "new" it was still feasible that someone with enough money and resources would do this.
I also liked the way the meglamaniac got carted off at the end after his assistant turned on him and ordered his memory to be wiped

Mol - on the new tablet Posted May 1, 2005
I'm now really confused about where to talk about Doctor Who!
"Dalek" reminded me of Disney's Beauty and the Beast in part - when the Dalek was acting pathetic to Rose it was very "At least ... I got to ... see you ... one ... last ... time".
Unfortunately, we had given the kids a huge build-up to how terrifying daleks are, describing in some detail our own hiding-behind-cushions childhood. This was reinforced by the Doctor's reaction to realising he was trapped in a room with one ... and then the damn thing turned out to be sad, lonely, and misunderstood! AARGH! I mean, all credit to the team for challenging our perceptions of Dalek and Doctor ("He's not the one pointing a gun at me") but no marks at all for undermining parental authority here .
Husband didn't like it at all.
Children were disappointed (having seen last week's trailer) that the Doctor still had his trousers on when he was being tortured.
I enjoyed it. I've seen it twice now, and it's got me thinking. I really like that in any TV programme. Mind you, I'm mostly thinking about the Time War. It can't be coincidence that the Nestene Consciousness, the ?Gelf (Cardiff-Dickens-ghosty ones) and the Dalek were all apparent casualties of this, and here's the Doctor bumping into them all in quick succession. And there was Cassandra, the Last Human, in The End of the World - a lot of "lasts" there. *Sigh* I should just go check out the spoiler sites really.
We also watched the first episode again (I was in and out and didn't see it properly though). Now, all those photos the internet geek had of CE's Doctor at well-known historical events. How? Cos it seemed that the Doctor had only just regenerated at the start ... and Rose wasn't in any of the photos ... and he's only got this series in that body.
Or maybe he did it all in the interval between Rose declining to accompany him and "Did I mention it can travel through time?"

You didn't happen to notice what colour the Dalek was on the inside? That's the blue alien death toll up again

Mol - on the new tablet Posted May 1, 2005
I didn't notice what colour it was, because I was trying to follow what it was saying while explaining to daughter number 2 how the programme-makers had constructed it and made it able to move ("I expect they've put a blown-up balloon inside and they're squeezing it from underneath"). Point taken, however.

Liked the way they updated the fake sites for this week.
My cousins kids have been loving playing at being the Dalek

This weeks episode trailer looked good
I was surprised the Doctor had enough time to get his clothes back on after he told them to release him or they'd all die.

(message originally posted by Ommigosh on the Dr Who thread - thought I'd bring it over here )
>>Bad Wolf - maybe it's The Master, his arch enemy from long ago.. Despite all the hints, the Doctor isn't merely the last time lord traumatised and half maddened by the Last Time War in which all his people apparently died. The Master somehow regenerated within the Doctor's body along with him and is now vying for control - this explains the mad grins, the new harshness and somewhat strange behaviour of the doctor who is under attack from within form his old worst enemy.<<
We were talking about this the other day, and had been thinking something along the same lines. Hubby came downstairs after taking a bath on Saturday evening (pre-Who, post-mowing the garden) with some fresh insights, though.
His theory concerns the TARDIS and that it is a living organism: The Master died in the TARDIS and may have transferred his consciousness into it at the point of death, having no other organism available that he could transfer to. This may explain why the Dr is acting weird, since he may be being influenced by the Master through his interface with the TARDIS.
He also theorises that it's not the Dr, or any other person, that is BBW but that this is what the TARDIS has become known as to other beings, such as the Nestine Consciousness.
At the point when the TARDIS had Bad Wolf spray painted on it in foot-high letters, Mickey was sat in the street with it. The Master, through the TARDIS, could have influenced Mickey - who is not particularly mentally strong, bless 'im - to go somewhere and cause all manner of mischief, which would be attributed to the Dr by association. This could also explain the Dr being a bit screwed up since he thinks he was responsible for something and its eating him up; he can't remember being involved, but the TARDIS was there, so he must have been. However, this is not necessarily unusual since the Dr suffers from - as Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap so aptly called it - swiss-cheese memory after regeneration (or leaping, for Sam).
His explanation for the BW references by the alien races is "imagine you're an alien and see an Eddie Stobart lorry. You don't know what the word for lorry is, so what would you refer to it as - an Eddie Stobart."
I did point out that this would require all alien beings to have at least a rudimentary working knowledge of the English language, which is a rather arrogant assumption, even if they had come across the Voyager probe at some point.
Comments anyone, or is everyone bored with this now except me?

It would explain Gwyneth's comment to Rose about her having seen the Bad Wolf

Interesting stuff, thanks Ancrene! Here's hoping the bad wolf isn't just a red herring after all. The Tardis has been playing up a bit apparently; so maybe something (The Master?) has gotten into it.

you know the way there has been a 'clue' to the badwolf in every episode except the first one
well the doctor arrives at rose's house and looks in through the catflap
and is it right that the last time we saw the master was in an episode called 'survival'
the working title of which was called.......
'catflap'

>> you know the way there has been a 'clue' to the badwolf in every episode except the first one <<
There was one in the 1st ep - but it was a "blink and you miss it" thing; the Nestine said / burbled 'Bad Wolf' at the Dr when it saw the TARDIS, and that's when the Dr started going off on one about having tried to save the Nestine homeworld. I think.
Nice link between the Master ep and the catflap stuff. Have to admit I haven't seen any of the old series' stuff for an age.
Key: Complain about this post
