Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Hmm! My favourite always was the circular one with the tiny balls on. Describing them purely as sugar doesn't quite give the right impression. Well, the balls may be sugar, but they're balls. Sugar implies crystals, which they're not.

Share and enjoy!

Well Mr Zarniwoop I have to say your preferences and mine seem to be diametrically opposed! My favourites are the all liquorice ones and the basic sandwiches, particularly the chocolate one. And you HAVE to eat all the layered ones slice by slice smiley - winkeye
Seriously though, it's a fine description of the range of allsorts in the packet but I think the preferences you state are your own rather than anything you can genuinely claim as a national popularity survey so I'd tend to avoid those. You can always resort to 'favourite of many' instead of claiming something is the most popular.
You talk about the Bassetts company but it's not been a separate business for many years. Cadbury Schweppes bought out Trebor Bassett about 10 years ago when I was still working in Bournville and I always put in an order in for some liquorice when my colleagues went off for business trips to Sheffield (HQ of Trebor Bassett Ltd back then, don't know if it's where they make the Allsorts though)

Sho - employed again!

Great idea for an article, you might want to mention about Bassets being sold. In Holland allsorts (of any brand) are called Englse Drop (I'm not quite sure about the spelling) and are very popular. In Germany they're just about always referred to as English sweets.

Btw, they weren't created by "incident" but by accident.

Plus, you can't really say that the sandwich ones come in 3 flavours, and then list one of the flavours as pink!!

You also didn't mention what my grandma called "chimneys" (she worked at Bassets for years) which are a tube of paste covered with a thin layer of liquorice. (and I eat them by breaking the liquorice with my teeth or a fingernail, peeling it off and eating it and then eating the paste. Disgusting habit)

Finally, the coconut ones: are they still rolled in coconut, or do they just have a textured outside. Back in the old days they were definately rolled when still a bit damp, and the coconut took on either the pink or yellow colour.

I forgot about those. You and I seem to share the same eating rituals.
Does anybody know their official name ?
