When is a recomendation spam?

I can think of some topics that I could post entries on, but some are about particular products available in the real world.
While a short item about the Acme Toaster Oven is probably spam, is a balanced article on the general pros/cons of Toaster Ovens also spam?
What about if Acme has the worldwide patent and a Toaster Oven monopoly? When there is only supplier of a product you can only describe it by refering to the company that has the monopoly - there is no way to compare the product with anyone elses.
