Sorry to point it out, but that's for all dna sites. Right now at 08:48 there's 22 h2g2 Researchers logged in.

606 mainly... I did a bit of nosing about and they've already got a forum set up with over 1000 registered users! If a bunch of sweary misogynists (sweeping generalisation based on topic headers observed by this Researcher) can do it we definitely can!

I'm not sure if this has been mooted yet but has anyone thought of approaching Yahoo to take h2 over, plugging us as 'An alternative to Wiki' it's worth a thought

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

There's lots of discussion over at the h2g2C on where the site should go and how:

Tufty - The point is that they should all have been integrated under a common *New Barlesque Banner* Instead on making them into individual DNA sites.
The introduction of DNA, brought in ten years ago via the purchase of h2g2, should have embodied the whole of the BBC Online community.
United they may survived, IMHO they would certainly have flourished at a time before Blogging and Twittering were online. At that time all that dnah2g2 needed was a bit of Facebook picture handling and the BBC could have been a leader in the internet web community world. smiley - ok

"Sadly the conclusion myself and my colleagues have come to is that H2G2 does not fit in the new shape of BBC Online"

Bah humbug. I remember getting the video emails from Zaphod et al in 1999 or so inviting me to join H2G2. I did, and I wrote a few entries for the guide.

More than a decade later I'm still here. Why? Because H2G2 is unique; a more-than-an-encyclopaedia that has somehow managed to be true to the spirit of its founder, and the once-radio, -tv, -movie show that to this day inspires an irreverent catalogue and commentary on Life, the Universe, and Everything.

The BBC owes a big debt to the show that was the Hitch-hiker's Guide, and it would be nice if it had recognised the asset it has in H2G2.

Ah well. Guess the Vogons have taken over.

I heard the BBC wanted to "dipose" of H2G" so i came on here to have a look at the site. Wow it look really interesting and I joined up. I hope the site can find new host.

Sadly the BBC is now locked into the path of running a narrower and narrower range of homogeneous content on more and more and more gadgets...but that's for them I guess

Meanwhile we have great sites like this.

Hmmm ... I've sort of heavily invested my time and talents into this site. I've written a number of entries that have made it into the Guide, but also lots of journal entries, contributions to The Post ... it's become a kind of home for me on the 'net. I don't get the same thing from FaceBook. This is just a much better place for talking about topics. You can start with a Guide Entry and then talk about that, or you can talk about someone's journal entry, or join a conversation ... is there any other site online in which people converse as much - proportional to how many of them there are? We've been speaking of how 'few' people there are on h2g2 and yet, there's a lot of writing activity here, and a lot of it is of very high quality. For me everything is part of the whole. The conversations and community activities can be stimulated by Guide entries and in turn spawn more Guide entries ... but all of it, is part of 'Life, the Universe, and Everything'. Even in the conversations we are exchanging information and ideas. Its not all just about facts. But this interactivity *is* life. We're more human than for instance WikiPedia. They got more facts, but I think our writing is often easier and more entertaining to read.

Somehow, the value of this site must be put clearly and understandably ... those of us who've been here for years, understand how special it is.

I've been here since 2000 ... and this place has so much potential that has not yet been realised. We could be much better than we are, we could be *recognised* for being an important part of the 'net. I really hope we could find a way to go on ... and not just go on: I really wish we can find a way of becoming what we *could* become. Really ... the 'system' we have in place here, is just fantastic. People can come and read - and if we do our job well enough, they will be informed, entertained, and fascinated. And they can join us and become writers. Writers contribute material for free ... but in this communal writing project, they get a chance to develop and hone their abilities. That should also count for something.

It's not the whole BBC World Service that's being axed, just (sic) 5 of its 32 services: the Macedonian, Albanian and Serbian services, English for the Caribbean and Portuguese for Africa.

Strange that these 5 services (16% of the total) seem to account for 27% of total jobs...
