But surely that could still be considered flooding? The bulk of the message would still be exactly the same from message to message.

Mina Posted Sep 19, 2002
Flooding is Posting a lot of messages to the same Conversation. Spamming is Posting the same message to lots of different ones.
The ACE greetings shouldn't be spam, because they should all be personalised to match the newbie they are greeting. Even if the rest is cut and paste (I was an ACE once too, remember!).
The nature of h2g2 is that sometimes Researchers want to pass a message to a lot of Researchers, we understand that, but adding something nice to a message is only polite. People are individuals, and like to be treated as such.

Mina said '20 identical messages *is* spam, whatever the reason. It's a simple matter to personalise each one to a small degree. Abi and I often have to post the same message to many different Researchers, and we manage to make them all slightly different.'
So I hope that the formula removal from the Guru's list of a close personal friend was just an oversight on her part then. Especially as she is fully aware of the reasons for that person not posting for the last three months.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Sep 19, 2002
I guess I'd better make sure then that when I can no longer put off welcoming new admissions to The Procrastinators Society - about every three months or so - and rush through the forum, I make small changes to each of the messages. On one occasion there were something like 20 of them, and I just cut'n'pasted the same message each time

I just wrote these guidelines on deciding whether your set of posts may be considered spam. Personal opinion, of course.

You'll notice I used lower-case letters to distinguish spam from SPAM...

Woah, everybody, *calm* *down*. I'm sure that Mina and the moderators will apply the same sort of logic that we've seen as a general trend over all my time here - the rule will be applied *sensibly*. So, if it's just a few people having a bit of fun together I'm sure it will be treated differently to posting 'die, all of you!' 4093 times to the Talking Point - if it is clearly a bit of a laugh.
Just like the way that abusive/offensive posts aren't allowed but we have been able to have a light-hearted 'What's wrong with... ...h2g2 Researchers?' thread that involved throwing random insults at posters for a joke - a joke for all those concerned.
So, if you're making an announcement to *relevant* people who are aware that you might need to send them something, then if you're sensible about it I would hope that that wouldn't be a big problem.

As far as Spam is concerned its not, but it now covers "Flooding" too.

HappyDude Posted Sep 20, 2002
I always considered "flooding" (along wiv "Trolling") a derivative of "spam" ….. have we really reached the point where the Ed's have to include rules that appear to be the equivalent of "Do not use your Microwave oven to dry wet pets"
Why list every little sub-action that might cause offence when one the description of one general-action will do
AND Finaly
Does the previously stated Editorial position that is OK for a researcher to spam threads attached to (non-Edited) pages authored by that specific researcher

The bit that concerns me is: 'We'll simply remove your Postings, and possibly your account.'
Won't the standard processes of warnings, a one week ban, followed by the modest proposal and then a lifetime ban apply? Please tell me they will.

Yes, they will.
"The removal of an account comes at the end of the Transgressions procedure, so yes, it is a standard punishment procedure if things go that far."
to quote Mina (posting #16 (?)).
