A Conversation for Talking Point: Addictions
it's just a cigarette
Maggaroux Started conversation Nov 9, 2001
just a bit of tobacco rolled in paper, with a little filter on the end. that's what i tell myself every time i light up. it's just a cigarette, so why do i cringe at the idea of stopping right now (yes, in the middle of a pack) and never having one again, ever again? yeah, they taste bad and do bad things to your lungs, and non-smokers can knock it to kingdom come. it's different when a thing has you physically hooked, and you've let yourelf believe that it's an integral part of your routine, your day, your character. anyone who knows the feeling of that first drag after a really long movie or waiting in a non smoking environment for hours and then getting outside to get thet little puff of "it's gonna be okay." especially now, when the world is so crazy. it adds an element of control and detachment from the world. it's up to you when you light up, how many you smoke. if you're in a crowd of people you don't like, you can act like you're just really into smoking that cigarette. it's like a shield. but maybe, just maybe, i can quit. i know if i just give it a couple weeks without smoking, i won't even want one. but i want one now.
