I wrote this Entry after a previous attempt at a Beautiful South Entry, by Req, was moved to Writing Workshop. The original version included the album discography and list of personnel which I've retained and, in the case of the personnel list, updated. The original Entry was, however, a bit short on band history and explanation as to what The Beautiful South are actually like. I've done my best to remedy that, and I hope you like the results.
Req also compiled a Beautiful South singles discography, which he turned into a separate Entry following discussions in the PR thread for the original Beautiful South Entry. There was some debate about whether including any kind of discography in the Entry on the band was a good idea, so I've adopted a compromise solution by keeping the albums list but not the singles list. I think that's a sensible approach, as the album discography will be of interest to some readers and isn't likely to need updating too often.
I hope that wasn't too confusing, and I hope you enjoy the Entry!

Well done Ormondroyd. Something else that most people would enjoy reading, I'm sure. I'll back you on this one. It tells me all I need and want to know but didn't know because, although they are occasionally mentioned on German radio, not so much detail is gone into.
No nits to pick, but for one endearing little typo:
.........."But Briana Corrigan was among those who objected" ........

A response at last! Have a and a , Trillian's Child!
I'm so glad that you liked the Entry. I had a look at the sentence you mentioned and couldn't see a typo, but on re-reading the line I did think it was a bit clumsy. I have therefore rewritten it to make the meaning clearer. I've also added one sentence towards the end just to confirm that Paul Heaton's solo album is now in the shops - or should be, anyway, according to his official website!

Thank you, Tinkerbell!
Isn't it amazing that we don't have a Smiley? I think this calls for a new campaign!

Excellent entry, hope it makes the guide quickly, it make good easy reading.
I remember well when they toured with out Jacqui and Paul had to sing her lines. It certainely puts another view on 'Don't Marry Her' and 'Perfect 10'

Thank you, Whisky and Gedge! Such a long silence on this thread, and now all this applause!
I think that if I'd have been in Jacqui's situation at the time of that last tour, I might have been tempted to buy a ticket for one of the shows and go in disguise, just to enjoy the sight of Paul singing all those embarrassing lines that she'd previously had to sing!

Well done.
Cracking entry. Don't you reckon the biscuit boy album should have done better in the charts (it didn't rach the top 75!!!!!!!)

Glad you like the Entry!
As regards the Biscuit Boy album: unfortunately, musical fashion is very much against bands and artists who deal in songs as opposed to dance beats, who sing rather than rapping and who aren't pre-packaged collections of pretty boys or girls. But perhaps I just feel sad about that because I'm about the same age as The Beautiful South!
That said, I think the South's best comeback strategy is obvious: release another Greatest Hits album! It might not sell quite as spectacularly as 'Carry On Up The Charts', but I'm sure it'd do well enough to remind everyone that they're still around!

I think they ARE releasing another greatest hits album before christmas.
It'll have all the singles from Blue, Quench and Painting It red, probably Pretenders To The Throne, possibly dream a little dream and either one or two new songs, and I think they're bringing a single out in November. This is all just rumours I've heard, but they sound quite likely to me.
I was right!!!
egon Posted Oct 1, 2001
I've just found out from the official website that they've got a single "The Roots of all evil" out on Nov 5th and a second greatest hits album, Solid Bronze, the following week.

Great minds think alike...
Trouble is, that means the Entry's out of date already! Ah well, whoever ends up subbing it should read this thread. So if you do read these words, dear Sub-Editor, could you please let me know that you have done so and that the necessary updates have been noted?
On the positive side, that means that the Entry should make it on to the front page around the time that the album is released and the band are back in the public eye. Which is cool.
