Hi all,
just a quick announcment. I'm working on something quite cool which will probably be of interest to you all. It's been in production for quite a while but will be released for testing hopefully by the end of this week.
Stay tuned for details...

It's just about ready for testing, but I can't publish webaddress yet as there might be security holes. If you'd like to know more, and have a look, please e-mail me at frankie (at) frankie roberto (dot) com - with surname as one word.

Take a peek at:
http://www.frankieroberto.com/alt2g2/index.xml
It's still a work in progress, and there are some obvious bugs and things not yet implemented, but it's getting there.
You need a browser that can do server-side xslt (Mozilla, IE 6 or IE 5 with add-on) and supports CSS (most modern ones).
Please don't exploit any security holes if you find them!

My , for what it's worth:
I don't think that making your own h2g2 is necessarily a positive thing, especially since you've borrowed the disclaimer etc. However, I think that this project would be *amazing* as a kind of OpenDNA or something of that sort. It would be fantastic if it could be made this way:
1. An admin area allowing manipulation of a stylesheet to set colours and to allow administrator access.
2. A layout with some basic graphics allowing for customisation - perhaps a budding CA might make a Graphics Kit or something?
3. A moderator facility.
As I see it, there isn't a decent product out there that mirrors DNA's forum-under-entry system, at least not for free.
Go on, give it a thought!

Hi Whoami?,
Good points. I am definately NOT trying to make an actual alt2g2. This site is great and it would be pointless to try and compete against it.
The actual backend of the site is something I've been working on for ages, just to meet my own needs. It's capable of running multiple sites, and alt2g2 is just one of those (number 6), which I made to demonstrate how the site could work like h2g2. I used the look of brunel becuase i already had a kind of css page mockup a while ago which i made to test how good css would be at replicating such a complex design.
So, the reason for the project is much more to do with the reasons you've given. It gives people a chance to play around with a similar technology to DNA, and allows the creation of new sites which can use aspects of the community model that DNA has shown to be successful.
One thing I should mention is that the backend I've created so far is extremely flexible. The creation of a forum to match every article is actually a setting, which you can turn off. It's even possible to have a single forum linked to more than one article, or a single article linked to more than one forum.
So yes, I'm happy (and encouraging) for people to get involved, by having 'editor' status on the site, designing skins, thinking up new sites, and even developing the software (it's all in php).

It's a shame, I'm not as good with PHP as I am in Perl, so er, if you want any graphics CAT Member sitting right here.

You've really made me happy! What hosting does it need? What DBs does it use? Am I asking too many questions?
Y'see, I'm building some sites - you can have a look over at http://www.dotsurfer.co.uk/ - but I'm looking for something a little more limited than a forum program.
There's Dotsurfer UK, Dotsurfer Network [borrow my design, add your relevant content with my permission] and your kenilworth - all experimental. Any feedback on the design would be appreciated, the sites are not finished and most links do nothing:
http://www.dotsurfer.co.uk/
http://www.dotsurfer.co.uk/network/
http://www.dotsurfer.co.uk/kenilworth/
Please do not check until 2140 BST (GMT+1h) tonight - that's in 10 minutes. I'm uploading them... now.
