I'm moving to Estonia!
Flying Penguin Started conversation Oct 26, 2005
I don't have a visa yet, but the decision is made and the ticket has been paid for. I'll be in Tallinn by the end of November, just in time for the Black Nights film festival. Hooray!
So being the antipodean ignoramus I am, I have a couple of questions.
Is Estonia considered Scandinavian (yes I know it's a Baltic state, but it seems culturally close to Finland).
Does anyone have any hints for getting holiday jobs. I'm guessing it's harder to find seasonal jobs in winter, but there must be something about. I'm not even sure where to start looking.

I am the only one to answer here, I'm afraid.
Estonia prefers to consider itself a Nordic country. Scandinavia is a geographical term. That's culturally. Linguistically Finland is most definitely the closest.Latvia and Lithuania are something very very different though with them we are historically the closest.
It's 8am here and I am sleeping, sorry.
As about jobs, it depends on what you can or are willing to do. There's always *something* available.
I'll be happy to help you as much as I can.

Great. So I'm safe to call Estonia Nordic. My next challenge is to be able to tell Estonians apart from Finns and Russians by sight. That's too easy to get wrong and offend people. Or maybe I should just learn to .
For jobs, I've been applying for IT jobs, but there must also be bar jobs and such available for english only speakers. I'm willing to do almost anything if it results in me not being poor. I guess I just need a place to start.
I just had a look at the weather. 2 degrees and snow. Looking forward to it . I'll have to learn how to stay inside with my .

Huge piles of snow, all brand new.
Finding IT work is not easy here, I guess. Unless you have a degree or very special skills.
Bars... yes, that may work in Tallinn. Tallinn will be your destination, as I understand?
Why do you need to tell Estonians apart from others anyway? (Finns in Tallinn are usually )
Btw, if you want to ask any specific information then you can find a list of my contacts on the bottom of my U-page.

Damn, I miss snow. Haven't seen real snow for about 5 years now. HOpefully there will be a lot of it when I go home to Sweden for Christmas...

If the Finns are usually drunk, then maybe you won't be able to tell the difference between a finn and myself.
I can't wait to live in snow. That will be a new experience for me.
Yep. Tallinn is where I'll be.

what do you mean finns in tallin are usually , hati aren't finns usually everywhere
scandinavia is a much discussed term it seems. it's just months ago that i learned only norway and sweden are "true scandinavian countries" as they are the only ones on the scandinavian peninsula. however most people count denmark in as well and many also finland
i say to with it all ! since we are only one race (the human race) on this grotesquely small space ship called why don't we include the rest of it too?
in the eyes of bob we are all scandinavians

True that NOrway and Sweden technically are the only Scandinavian countries, but everyone considers the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) to be part of Scandinavia, cause it's easier to remember (even if a lot of people forget about Iceland since they're a small island far away, and they don't make much of a fuss).
I say we should include all countries at one time or another owned by any of the Nordic countries to be part of the Nordic region. That would include Russia, Poland, The Baltics, Khaczhakkhstan (or however you spell it) and all the other countries down towards the south where Calr XII of Sweden went for his prolonged picnic.

Can I just make it a bit easy and say anyone with blue eyes is Scandinavian? Then I would fit in nicely.
I would include blonde hair in the essential traits of scandinavianism, but that would rule out too many Finns.

But in my very limited experience of ogling at scandinavian women, I thought that there was a greater percentage of blondes amongst the Norwegians and Swedes. Maybe I'll just have to look some more.

How could I possibly forget it??? After all it's only 3 h2g2ers I have seen in Estonia. Well, and Mme F but she doesn't count really, does she.
As about blondes and such - I guess I won't qualify. Not the tiniest bit.

I don't really know how long I'll be there. I'm going for a year long visa and I plan to come back to Australia around November next year, but maybe I'll head back to Europe again after that. Then again I might end up in Australia a little earlier than planned if I don't find a job.
I'll just go whereever things take me I guess. I'm too young to think ahead that far .

I'm 26, but can one ever be too old to live for the moment?

No. One can never be too old to live for the moment.
Why Estonia? You have been there before, haven't you?
