I have had episodes of the fear which still make me squirm years after the event.

well I see it was a huge success in the writing workshop...
Yeah - I've been there, done that - ain't it horrific? Wasn't there a h2g2 conversation somewhere on the stupidest things you've done while drunk? Umm...
aha! http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A418547 - but the conversations all seem to be gone...

The WW community were having none of it so to speak.
I've got no idea what people think of it, so I'm flogging it here, there always seems to be someone about to offer a comment.
The monster in the lake

Hi Hobbes, Happy NY!
Just read this and I like it. Quick question, have you ever read The Bonfire of the Vanities?
There is a journalist in it who goes out and gets seriously wrecked most nights, and Tom Wolfe describes one morning when he goes through exactly the experience you describe.
He describes looking into a lake and trying to peer through the murk to see what lies below. At first, nothing can be distinguised at all, then a faint form. You can't tell what it is, but you know it's down there, and you know it insipires fear, forboding.
Gradually, glimpse by tantalising and terrifying glimpse, you make out bits of it - a fin here, a tail there, a flash of tooth or a rolling eye. Suddenly it breaks the surface and the awful moment of clarity and realisation drags your stomach down to ground level and constricts your throat and chest to leave you out of breath. Horrifying but reminiscent of some of those worse mornings after.

No I haven't and that makes my shoody prose sound quite poor.
It being christmas I have been under the influence of multiple cases of the fear, it all came to a head yesterday when I returned to work. Never, never again will I drink beer to excess.

Hi Hobbes - if you ever read this.
Thanks for posting this in AWW. You may not be aware that the nature of AWW is changing, as it seems possible at least that non EG entries may still get official status and a place on the Front Page.
Because AWW has changed, I am not sure that this is the right place for this entry. It is good, it makes the point deftly, but it is slight. I am going to suggest that the entry is removed to the Flea Market for two reasons. Firstly I don't think that as it stands it is likely to make it into the Underguide, and secondly - I have a horrible feeling I am talking to myself! I cannot see any posts by you in the last 5 months, so I am assuming that you have 'left the building'.
What do my fellow Miners think?
