A1033462 - BRIEF ENCOUNTER.

Good entry and, if true, quite scary in a nice kind of way. I love visits from those that have been before and have had two...one involved flickering lights in a garden and because of it I shall forever believe in fairies and the second was an older man (circa late 1800's) in a house in Preston. We had a conversation about pens (the kind you dip into inkwells)and he was very gentle. Turned out he'd lived in the house years ago and his daughter had died. (I found out years later)
I was six at the time but I remember his waistcoat to this day, pale beige with a darker pattern. he wore glasses too.... strange life.
Take care

Hi There Useless Hound (weird nickname) for that, my story was indeed true right down to the weird smell of cordite (which I never mentioned in the post, probably because Im not sure how to spell it?)It was good to get a response to the post, as most times they go un-noticed. Thanks again

It's a good tale Smudger - did you ever find out anymore about who it might have been. Or if anyone else ever saw him?

Why wouldn't a forward magazine room smell of propellant?
What did the ship have on it? Five inch guns? Or pom-poms?
Cordite is a generic term used by many writers when they mean gun powder, regardless of any technical accuracy issues.

Hi Waz, for that, and no one else saw it, probably because they never went in, I never looked into that much really as to the story behind it. I think I was scared of the stick I would get from the lads, so I never mentioned it again.
for your reply, it was good to hear from you.

Hi There Tonsil Revenge, The ship had two 4 inch guns and an anti aircraft machine gun, the forward magazine was where the 4 inch shells would have been stored. Empty due to the refit I hope that solves the problem.
for your reply any way

Goodness!
I just read this, and i like it, .
Mainly because of the matter-of-fact writing style, that none-the-less achieves an eery sense of supernatural presence. Just one or two 'dabs' of atmosphere create a far more disturbing whole, for my money, than some of the more verbose, descriptive types of 'scary' writing.
I tend to be a cynic when it comes to ghosts and fairies and such, but that's beside the point; most people have an innate 'fear factor' that means that the shiver goes down the spine in spite of your brain saying 'Hang on a minute!'
Sorry to hear you say that you 'go un-noticed', Smudger - (unless it suits you, of course, ). Well, i certainly noticed this piece!

must admit I never believed in that sort of thing until that happened?
