Well done Joanna, please may I urge you to think about registering as a bone marrow donor at the same time, just ask when you attend a session.

How does bone marrow donation work? What do they do? I may just have to go and look that one up

In the Uk if you are registered as a blood donor they will also ask you if you want to go on the bone marrow register. They are able to extract details of your marrow from a sample of your donations to enable them to make a match. Of course if you are not allowed to give blood you are also therefore unable to be on the bone marrow register.

I was just curious about the whole procedure, i.e how they take out the marrow, injections, what it involves the whole bumph, you see i never realised that bone marrow transplants were carried out, i guess i never really though about it too much.

Oh they are especially needed in Leukemia cases and so like. They will only ever have to extract it if you are found to be a perfect match for someone who has no close relative who is a match for them (I think) but it is still very important as a lot of people have noone left who is that perfect match for them, yet somehow is the mish mass of the human race there may be someone. Mind you I'm not really an expert on this and will have to research it further.

yeah, i always thought of bone marrow as something very vital that you couldn't really remove too easily, guess i was wrong, I think somewhere in that big brain of mine i knew that it was posssible i just never really gave it much thought. I'm going to go and look that up now

I had completely forgotten about this thread...

Well, to make a long story short, by a string of coincidences I was found to have a rather unusual blood type which made drawing my blood worthwile after all. So Iäd like to be taken off the "Give blood on my behalf"-list and instead listed as giving blood on behalf of Titania. If that´s ok.

you're not the only one who'd forgotten this. I went along & gave an armful on Wednesday, but it didn't quite replace the amount my daughter-in-law had to have on Tuesday, never mind, back again in three months
