OK - cheers Mikey - I stand (or rather sit) corrected - stats was never my strong point. The impression of the entry is, however, that a sibling is always a better match than a parent and it would seem from what you say that they are equally likely to be worst - you just hope you have enough of then to choose one that matches well for the antigens in question.
Might be worth saying that it is a particular small number of genes, rather than overall homology that counts.

Phew! Changes abound:
>the grammatical bit in the new section done
>the autograft section altered accordingly
>sharing half and not at least half genes put in
>altered the cross-matching footnote to include HLA and stresses that it is a small aspect of the genetic make-up of the person
>added that the matching is more often by chance

Actually, parents are rarely a good enough match. In most cases, parents will share 3 of the 6 HLA genes with their child (the only way they can share more than that is if they also share HLA genes with the other parent). I seem to remember hearing that 4/6 was the absolute minimum, and that doctors generally shoot for 5 or 6/6. While (statistically) somewhat more than half of siblings will have 3 or fewer HLA genes in common with the sibling needing the donation, the remainder will have 4-6 in common (think of a normal curve with 3 as the mean and median, and a range of 0-6 matching HLA genes).
