An early music video which really did it for me was Billy Ocean's 'Lover Boy'. I just loved the fantasy elements in it and was drawn in to the story. His video to 'When the Going Gets Tough' wasn't bad either.
Other memorable videos for me include 'Cry' from Godley and Cream and 'Take On Me' from Aha.
As you say, these days all imagination seems to have gone out of the window for the sake of posturing, semi naked girls - not that many male viewers are likely to complain I suppose.

Take on Me was a great vid
one of the most memorable was Sledgehammer by Peter Gabrial, an early example of ardman animations
also, most of the 80s Jacko vids were more like mini movies
