I know of someone just like Bob's friend - he worked for a small company which then got involved with mobile phones just as the mobile phone boom happened, then he worked for another small company which eventually became the provider of the backbone of the internet, and all the time he was taking shares as part of his salary. At the age of 40, he sold about 2/3 of his shares (and he was aready on a 6 figure salary by then), which netted him a tidy sum, and he retired, a millionaire.
