I know it's not exactly exhaustive. In fact, that's the point. It's a little bit of a joke, but I think it's Guide-ready.

Could you put a second line break before "This is an example of a placeholder." so that it's nicely spaced out?

Otherwise, smiley - applausesmiley - ok

Gnomon - time to move on

Normally it is recommended that there should be at least 500 words in an entry, but in the circumstances I think this will probably do for the moment until we come up something better.

Maybe later.

I'm not so sure about your other suggestion though. The article is indeed interesting and relevant, but I'm worried that adding anything would dilute the central joke.
I would also like to have referenced an article by DNA, collected 'The Salmon of Doubt' (although I'm now having trouble locating it in my copy) in which he makes the case that a line in "Doh, Ray, Me" (or whatever it's called) from "The Sound of Music" is actually a placeholder. If I were really going all-out, I would also have mentioned that there is a 'Captain Placeholder' who is a river ferryman in World of Warcraft. I decided against both of these, though.

I will add the line gap, though.

Lah, a note to follow So.

He actually told everybody in that Salmon of Doubt essay that if they had any ideas for a better line, to come to h2g2 and suggest them. For a while we got people making suggestions.

Oh yes, and I did also consider the line gap initially, but wasn't sure if it would seem that the sentence was being referred to as the placeholder, rather than the whole entry. As long as you all think it's okay though, I've added the extra line now.

You could change it to "This Entry is an example of a placeholder."

smiley - laugh I wasn't being serious, Bob, just continuing the joke. The other Entry uses a similar joke, being about procrastination...
