If someone could help this confused newby?
radarhunnihawk Started conversation Nov 29, 2004
Just posted two articles that I did for university coursework last year. Now in these I quoted from a number of sources but left a bibliography at the end. Im just wondering however, with me quoting from books and websites etc, is this classed as plagerisum or not???

In this case, it looks okay -- each of the quotes are relatively short (a sentence or two), and not a significant portion of the original work from which they're derived. Plus, you've made it clear in the text where each quote comes from.
If you just want these entries to be as they are, they should be fine -- I don't think they break any of the House Rules.
However, on your personal space, you talk about the entries being edited -- that would only happen if you submitted them to Peer Review for inclusion in the Edited Guide. In that case, I really would suggest you rewrite them a bit -- not only because we tend not to use quotes so much in the Edited Guide, but also because the writing style for Edited Guide entries tends to be more casual, and less like a school paper.
Any other questions?

Ah thank you for clearing that up. Future entries will not be like school papers but definitly in my own voice, just wanted to clear up in my own mind how far i could go regarding quotes and stuff.

Ahmmm.. yes but be careful there.
The use of the first peron singular is a complete no-no here and personal opinions must be disguised as popular opinion or at least not be at odds with the perception of popular opinion as seen by the BBC.
There are other prohibitions and pitfalls but many of these can be uncovered by exploring the homepage of <./>AggGag</.>CAC-C, a organisation which has long protested this site's restrictions on creative writing. The links on that page will explain much about rules and regulations and guidelines and the fine lines between an Edited Guide Entry and just a plain old Guide entry.
<./>AggGag</.> was the first line of defrense in a long and winding tale in the never ending battle for free speech in cyberspace. This struggle has only recently culminated in recognition of the UG (Underguide) as a 'semi-offical' outlet for fiction and first personal accounts. You will find links to the new Underguide there and at the h2g2 Front Page.

Sorry jwf, but all of what you said about writing for the Edited Guide is inaccurate at least some of the time, and some of it all of the time. I understand that you have your own personal feelings against the Edited Guide, but I think sticking to the facts is best for all -- after all, you would surely be peeved if I went around giving newbies biased and inaccurate information about the Underguide, wouldn't you?

I quite agree. I will always take exception to anyone distorting the truth on the basis of some petty prejudice or personal agenda they might embrace.
But unless things have changed since that <./>AggGag</.> page was last amended I fail to see where we are in error about the facts. There is, obviously, an iconoclastic tone to our message but the links on that page should present the facts for themselves.
I recognise that in response to campaigns such as ours, some changes have been made to site policies and I may well have missed being made aware of any that might now be making a liar out of me.
So I hope you will point out specific errors of fact, or any links to pages whose content may have been altered without our notice, so that I can make corrections. You are the first to mention this and I wouldn't want anyone else dismissing our cause as anything less than a sincere and forthright campaign to encourage unrestricted creative writing.

The error is in suggesting that we restrict Creative writing, JWF. We don't; you can do as much of it as you like. As the Writing Guidelines suggest, just don't expect us to read it.
Sorry about that, radarhunnihawk. For all the information you need on writing for the Edited Guide, check out our helpful <./>writing-guidelines</.>

The good news is that there is somewhere to write non-fiction - the Edited Guide, and somewhere to write fiction too - the <./>UnderGuide</.> , <./>thepost</.> and <./>agggag</.> so everyone is a winner

Lesson 2:
Gender Identities In Cyberspace
Chapter 1:
Assumptions and Intuition
One of the first troubles many cyber-newbies will run into is a pattern of overt dissembling by online persona who feel quite safely anonymous and beyond reproof or reproach. They will lie about their age, sex, location and social and marital status.
Since most cyberspatial relations are generally kept at a safe and anonymous distance, the truth of these factors will never really matter unless some real life encounter is planned.
But if any of these matters matters more than the others it is usually gender. People tend to get upset and confused when assigned the wrong gender identity.
At first it is best to simply make a gender-neutral assumption and when necessary use the masculine forms of pronouns until otherwise informed.
Experienced cybernauts will tell you that eventually you will begin to intuit and even recognise patterns in online names. Often a excess of masculine associations such as 'radar', 'hun' and 'hawk' are a clear signal of a feminine hand at the keys...
Here endeth the lesson.

It's okay, I've been here for years, and people still quite frequently think I'm male -- more often with newbies, but occasionally someone who has known me for quite awhile. This is why elsewhere in life, I've taken to spelling my name as Miki -- more obviously female.
And while many men I know around hootoo (and elsewhere online) will generally use the male pronoun whenever gender is unknown, the women I know do so far less frequently -- choosing to use the awkward 's/he', or the invented 'shi' or simply to avoid using a pronoun at all when the gender is unknown (I generally opt for the latter, myself).

Hi Everyone,
i am new to the site, and am studying it for a graduate class entitled, "online communities." this thread caught my attention since it is addressing some of the questions i am interested in, such as how the site is separated into these different posting spaces, and how the guidelines are seen by members of the community.
i am interested in conducting short, informal phone interviews about this topic. more information about my project is on my space if you are interested in learning more about it. if you would like to participate in anyway, i would really appreciate it.
thanks,
Aslan
