I guess this is how I apply for membership. I was working with my number a long time until I realized how easy it was to get to 42 for me. Nothing but addition and subtraction.
Thanks
CG
(9-9)+(51-8)-1 = 42

Not quite, you should split up the 51 too, like in
9-9+(5+1)*(8-1)=42
(9-9)+(51-8)-1 = 42

Keeping digits together is within the rules.
CG, my solver program suggests the no-bracket addition-only solution:
9+9+5+18+1
as well as
9*(9-5)-1+8-1
9*9-5*1*8+1
Key: Complain about this post
(9-9)+(51-8)-1 = 42
