gosh i hope someone comes around to add us, 4me2me!
okay... so i found three more... can someone look them over to see it they work too?
original one: [(8+4+0-1-4)6]-0 = 42
first new one: [(8/4+0+1+4)6]-0 = 42
second new one: [(8-4+0)(-1)]+(46-0) = 42
third new one: [(-8+4+0)^1]+(46-0) = 42
...hmmm i wonder if there are anymore...

I'll bet theres hundreds. Well, tens anyway. Those combinations are everywhere. Way back when I was young I did my 42isms at A597314, but Argon0 *still* never got round to addimg me to his list . Maybe now. Or perhaps I got disqualified for being too boring and/or for not finishing the job with potential arctan variants.

Well it was back in 2003, I did add some long standing requests. Argon agreed the page was becoming quite long. "

Entirely irrelevant but noteworthy:
At this precise moment my downloading torrents are collectively at 42% precisely.
But while I'm here, I don't know if I'm officially 42d but I do have a 42:
(1 + (3 * 3) + 0) + (4 * 8) * 1 = 42
Nobody's corrected me during the two years it's been drifting across my PS so I assume it's correct.

I try to convert my name into a 42... And I get a perfect score:
4me-2me (We use the number 1 for A, 2 for B, 3 for C,... and the - equals 0)
So:
4=4 / M=13 / E=5 / -=0 / 2=2
It gets
4+13+5+0+2+13+5=???
42!!!!

I guess I can continue to survive not being on the list though, so no worries

Nice - good to see a few other peeps doing their best for combinatorics...
Almost makes me feel like I should have done more for the field, chances of there being no InvTan combos are pretty low I guess...
Umm, InvTan(1) - 7 + 4 - 3 + 2 + 1 =
InvTan(1) -7 + 4 + 3 - 2 -1 = 42
Make that, the chances of there being less than I dont know, 32 trig comos are pretty low I guess...
Damn, have a feeling I should update my entry sometime. Aaargh.
maybe I wont bother unless someone else starts claiming some sort of record

yes there is alot of alliteration and internal rhyme in there ... and of course all the lines rhyme (which is very amazing!) i am sure i could find more poetical pluses about it if i knew how to say the ! thing... stuff about beat tempo meter and natural inflection...
could you read (spell) a cupla lines out for me? so i could see how it goes?

Well its definitely doesn't scan very well, although I suppose a certain amount of license may be used in interpretation of the brackets...
(1 x 7) x (4 x 3) / (2 x 1) = 42
Compare
Open bracket one times seven close bracket
Multiply by
Open bracket four times three close bracket
Divide by
Open bracket two times one close bracket
Equals 42
...
One by seven, enclosed in brackets
Times four by three, enclosed in brackets
Over two by one enclosed in brackets,
Equals 42...
Come to think of it, some of those brackets are redundant surely?

One by seven, enclosed in brackets
Times four by three, enclosed in brackets
Over two by one enclosed in brackets,
Equals 42...
the product of one by seven times the product of four by three divided by the product of one by one equals forty two?
?how do you say the !

oops i mean
the product of one by seven times the product of four by three divided by the product of two by one equals forty two?

WEll you could use factorial, shriek, or possibly even exclamation mark if we're bein all poetic about it.
The square of that which follows, is 42;
One thousand seven hundred and forty three,
Plus twenty one.
Hmmmm.
(1! x 7) x ((4! / 3!) + 2!) x 1 = 42
Open brackets the factorial of one, multiplied by seven close brackets,
Multiply by
Open brackets open brackets factorial four over,
Factorial three close brackets,
Add the factorial of two close brackets)
Multiply by one,
Obtain forty two.

This reminds me a song of Tom Lehrer, New Math:
"You can't take three from two,
Two is less than three,
So you look at the four in the tens place.
Now that's really four tens,
So you make it three tens,
Regroup, and you change a ten to ten ones,
And you add them to the two and get twelve,
And you take away three, that's nine.
Is that clear?
..."
I compose my own Ode to the Forty-Two:
I’m getting
Something
That gives forty-two
And you too
Can search an answer
Of when they saying “Sir!”
They want to say
I’m okay.
So when four me
And two me
Give an incredible forty-two
It means I’m crazy too!
I was inspired by the Vogon poetry
