Been there, read it, made some comments, which I hope helped!
It is difficult, some words are really offensive in some countries and not in others, others vary from person to person and region to region. Oh um, well we'll just try to be fair and do our best on this, that should work well, at least most of the time.

That's the beauty of Language for you....
Speaking of which: foreign language entries.... Surely there must be sufficient people out there speaking/typing foreign languages for H2G2 to be able to pick one or two per language (OK we can't cover them all) whom it could trust, and who would be willing to act as volunteer "moderators" which the "real" moderators could forward any posts in that language to and which could be "moderated" this way....
OK it involves the beeb trusting external people (which I gather would be a problem) but a small trial could be started - e.g. with Bubblish - which is the only other language I speak well enough atm...

Peta Posted May 3, 2001
Well at the moment, Abi is our bubblish co-ordinator. But thanks!
Apparently we could still be held legally liable if we use volunteer translators, so from the sueing point of view we'd still be totally liable. I'd suggested this one to, but apparently its a total no-go. Sorry.

Sorry Peta.
I was acting immature. I'd had a bad day and just got very p****d off (is P****d a swear word? I never thought it was, I starred it for you anyway.) at the new BBC rules and took out my inner angst on an innocent moderator. (when it really should have been on my lecturers, my family, my ex-friends or myself.)
Sowwy. I mean no harm.

Aww, isn't that sweet...
Now you too kiss and make up
Something we should all aspire to: open dialogue with tptb. As I'm sure I've mentioned a few times before, it's not their fault, and if they made the changes we want them to, things would be a lot less difficult for them. So obviously they have real concerns...
Rob.

I just noticed that the Moderators, when they remove an entry, display a message stating that: "This message was deleted by the author".
I know I didn't delete any of my entries... why is this still in the message? They're putting words in my mouth - in fact, they're pretending that there's self-censorship going on.
I still don't have a problem with the entry I posted, and yet visitors will think it was I who removed it...
Angry,
Rob.

I suspect their argument will be that you deleted it by breaking the T&Cs... Or somebody just screwed up. Either way, it sucks.

Sick Bob,
Did you also want your name added to the bottom of the Zaphodista page, or were you just using this forum to chat? It's okay either way, but I like to get a clear signal from people before signing their names to my rant.

Almighty Rob & Peet,
This is very odd, because I've been checking that page every few days, waiting to see if it had been cleared up. (I really love that ASCII recruiting poster, and want to put it up on the Zaphodistas page if we can make a version of it that the censors will tolerate.)
I saw this entry a few days ago when it said "This entry was deleted because it violated the House Rules" (or whatever, I'm paraphrasing here). It was the standard message I've seen in other places, usually two or three lines long, then the stupid bit at the bottom about "We apologise for this interuption to your surfing."
Then the last time I checked, maybe a day or two ago, the entry showed only one line: "This message was deleted by the author." I thought it was odd that Almighty would have done that, but I thought there are probably a lot of motives people might have for deleting an entry (even one that has been deleted by the censors?).
But if this statement is untrue, then you should definitely post a question about it on the moderation help desk. Peta is usually very sensitive about statements that are true or untrue, and if this strange message was an accident, I'm sure they will work to correct the situation. If there is some other odd situation or explanation, it would also be interesting to hear. Please let us know if you hear anything odd.

Hey guys,
I've updated my user page a bit, and there's a drop-down list box of all the Zaphodista members. If you want to add it to your page, then you can use the "test" command to get the GuideML.
Try this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpage144149
Cheers,
Rob.

OK, don't bother clicking the link above, because apparently my page has been deleted. If you go to my user page proper, you'll see that it hasn't. I'm not very happy, and I think somebody's picking on me. That's the second weird message I've received in the last couple of days (see prior posts). I've complained to the help desk http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F63567?thread=110597 I'm not keen on conspiracy theories, but the testuserpage command works for other people, so why not me too? This is all so strange. Ever get the feeling someone's watching you? Rob

Almighty Rob,
34 minutes after you posted the above message, the entry that you linked to says "This Guide Entry has been deleted."
Is there java involved in the drop-down box? That may be against house rules.
Very frustrating. Can someone please remind me why we are staying here, spending twice as much time to communicate half as much information, just because it used to be a cool place with a nice atmosphere. Now the atmosphere is more like a********e.

There's no java in the drop-down box.
I got it from one of the Gurus, who had adapted the BBC dropdown box (you know, the one in the top left corner...) to work for h2g2 entries.
So I don't know what's going on
