A Conversation for h2g2 FAQ: Moderation

It would seem to me that the underlying problem here is the house rules not being very clear, so would it not be in everyones interest (including my own, as I do not wish to be yikes'd again), if H2G2 was to clarify the rules, this would surely be in the interest of both parties involved, both parties meaning the users and H2G2.

I did not go out of my way to deliberately break the rules and after speaking to several other Buffy fans, who have themselves had their pages yikes'd, it did occur to me that someone maybe going out of their way to yikes all of our pages, which raises the question, do H2G2 have a system in place to protect the H2G2 community against un-necessary and deliberate yikes'ing?

I would personally like to thank SEF for all of her help and all of those who have advised me as to the best course of action, have a smiley - bubbly on me, as it's my birthday.

Most definitely, yes. But there's no evidence of that here. It could have been a fellow researcher acting quite innocently. It could have been a member of BBC staff.

Yikesing your page wasn't wrong but perhaps it was overenthusiastic. I'll raise the matter in the Guru's group and hopefully this will get passed on to the ACEs but that doesn't cover everyone who might feel a responsibility to yikes for whatever reason.

It's important not to take h2g2 too seriously. Worse things happen at sea, as they say. Your Spaces are never lost - at the very worst they'll be able to rescue something from the backup tapes - so there's nothing to worry about although I appreciate that delays (especially overnight or over a weekend) are frustrating. A friendly Guru or <./>ACE</.> will be able to provide you with a link to your messages so you won't miss out on contact with your friends.

Looking at the evidence available, I'm pretty certain that there are a number of technical problems related to the moderation system. Annoying as these undoubtedly are, there is no conspiracy to make life difficult for researchers. h2g2 only has limited access to technical help these days so things can take an amazing amount of time to sort out. If you have a problem and you think you may be missing an email, contact a Guru and they will help you.

I'm sorry this took so long to sort out. It must have been a nasty shock to have your page failed.

I was more than shocked, I was angry smiley - grr, I had spent months not only doing my own page, but also took an active role in doing the others pages and felt it entirely an un-necessary action, just for the sake of a couple of pictures, as has been mentioned, surely a simple message along the lines of remove picture X, would have been alot easier.

As I think I explained elsewhere, ordinarily you should have just been able to edit your page but a recent bug means that the status isn't resetting properly. It's just unfortunate timing in this case.
