Uneven application of copyright rules

Mikey the Humming Mouse - A3938628 Learn More About the Edited Guide!

I'm getting really confused about the way in which moderation of copyrighted material is happening. I've seen several cases of *extremely* clear copyright violation which have been left up despite my yikes!, and yet I've seen entries moderated which were much more clearly in a grey area. An example of a "gray area" copyright issue that resulted in moderation was - the recently discussed poetry review in which it was decided that the amount of review was not sufficient to counter the amount of poem quoted. http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F63567?thread=127906 Some examples of clear copyright violations that were not moderated (despite a yikes!) include: a posting of approximately 1 page in length that was composed of a cut and paste of an article (in its entirety) from a commercial website. the author is not cited, nor does it appear to fall under any context of "fair use". http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F48874?thread=105051, post #12 a page of song lyrics. yes, they cite the writer and don't use the whole song, but it still doesn't fall under "fair use" -- it's not in the context of a review or anything like that. the page contains nothing but the copied lyrics. http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A568802 Could someone please explain what's going on here? Hi Mikey,

Thank you for bringing this issue up. Peta and Mark are away for the first part of this week, and I am keeping the Moderation system ticking over.

I will draw this matter to their attention on their return. I think you will agree that it is important that any inconsistencies get discussed by the relevant people, particularly Peta as she runs the Moderation system smiley - smiley

Hi, Mikey -

Just wanted to say thanks for your attention/help during my struggles with the "archy and mehitabel" article. (I assume you've been following the 'progress' in the Help Desk thread, and are as up-to-date as I am.)

As I told Peta, anything this process may help to clear up and/or define for the guide overall helps me feel like I have contributed in some way - regardless of the final status of the original entry.

Thanks again. smiley - ok

I would also be interested in reading the reply to Mikey's query, given my continuing difficulties with the Bill Hicks article A592328...

Hi Mikey,

How are you doing? I've just got back from holiday today, I really needed to take a short break. smiley - online2long

Okay onto your queries.

The poetry entry. That's been discussed fully over on its own conversation, you gave the link above. Please see my responses there. There isn't a grey area, the legal department decide if something is in breach of copyright, that's their job. Their decision is of course final.

The Hummus entry. I can't find a direct match on the web. I checked the link that you gave to me, and it really isn't the same, have you compared them side by side? None of the wording is similar, the h2g2 entry gives a recipe, the page you quoted doesn't. They're really only on the same subject. Maybe the entry has been edited since your comments were made? Anyway it looks fine to me now.

Song lyrics, yes, they're copyright and I've just taken them down. Thanks for drawing them to my attention Mikey. smiley - smiley

Peta -- It wasn't the Hummus entry I ever complained about, it was a posting in the PR thread, which *is* word for word. I give the link above.

Hi Mikey

Thanks I've got it now. I can only assume that the mod made the same mistake I did, and thought you were referring to the entry itself. Thanks for pointing it out.
