Hi! I wrote this as one of my essays for my International Law course that I did last year, and I was wondering if it was.. erm, alright! Thankfully the recent decision by Balfour Beatty to pull out of the project means that the problems that I cited will not be as much of an issue anymore, but I would still like to know what you guys think.

Thanks for your time,

Bambos =)

Hello mate smiley - smiley

This is a subject I am pretty interested in, having been involved in a protest myself, just before they pulled out. I think that your article, while good, isn't quite suitable for the guide in its present format. You need a better angle - perhaps less of an essay-like analysis, and more of a presentation of the facts.

For instance, a structure like this might work better:
*History of the area - tells us something about the area where the dam was planned, why it's historically important, gives us a bit of background.
*The Dam - why the dam was planned, what the benefits were supposed to be, who was involved, and so on.
*Problems and Protest - Why was there so much of an outcry? Also, perhaps, some info on the problems in the area, the persecution of the Kurds, the KLA and so on. Also, the corruption allegations levied at Balfour Beatty.
*Aftermath - why did BB pull out? What was the reaction of the pressure groups involved? Any government statements?

These are only suggestions, mind you - I'm not an authority. Its a good essay, with the makings of a great entry in there smiley - smiley

Cool! I thought the essay like analysis was quite good at the time, although this was because I wrote it for one of my courses. I haven't really had time to restructure the article, due to my workload and my other commitments, but I'll hopefully be able to take a good look at it soon.

Thanks!

I've had only a passing interest in this affair, and I was interested to read this essay. I found it informative, if a little difficult to digest.

I agree that it needs to take account of BB's recent withdrawl from the project, and I'd like to see mention of the groups who helped change their mind. Wasn't Mark Thomas was a prominent protester?

I also agre with the idea of breaking the essay up into headed sections. It would make it so much more readable.

This has got the makings of a great entry. smiley - smiley

Yes it has!

Seeing that I'm a Scout *and* freshly loaded with three picks to make...

... I'll keep one of them aside for this one - provided that a little structuring is added (talking of headers and the like, but not necessarily in GuideML. Although this would be vewwwy nice!) and the above comments are taken care of.

but i think it would be best if you went to the scouts homepage first and read what they had to say, that would explain much better than I.

Just to let you know that this entry was recommended by a scout, but I feel that Bambos, the esteemed author of the entry, needs to incorporate a little more info (on BB) before it is completed.

I'm sure there's a Scout or two around who will help... somewhere. smiley - smiley

I don't know. I didn't think i'd need to write anything more about Balfour Beatty, since the primary focus of the essay was on the Ilisu Dam Project and the consequences of building the dam in that point, or even building it at all. Anyways, my finals have nearly finished, so I will endeavour to come back to it as soon as I can.
