Here's the cure for rust:
Cut out any rusty bits and replace with new bits. Ensure all new bits, and also that all existing unrusty bits, are fully sealed off from the elements with an unbroken paint film, or where appropriate with underbody wax. Inspect periodically to ensure that the steel remains sealed off from the elements - no elements, no rust!
I'm not suggesting that it will never rust at all, but as long as you can keep the weather, and particularly road salt, from coming in to contact with unprotected steel you should remain pretty much rust-free for 8 - 10 years in my experience, and only require minor repairs after that - which is cheaper than replacing your car every 3 years.
I'm won't pretend that new cars aren't better built - of course they are - but we'll see how well all those electronics work in 30 years!
