The only time Germans are allowed to express patriotism is at football matches. Otherwise, people look at you funny and think you're a neonazi...
But then, this country has been a country for only a very short time, and has a very checkered past. It's not even been reunited for 20 years!
That said, I don't feel particularly German, but having lived in the US for eight years, do feel that I am European. I want to get out of here to do my Master's, possibly even to work later - and it certainly won't be in the US!
