Here's a little thing I wrote about my all-time favorite way to waste time when I was in junior high and high school. Enjoy!

Nice entry. You might like to mention that there are hundreds of new text adventures appearing every year and there's quite a large internet community surrounding it. However, they're not called text adventures any more, they're now called "Interactive Fiction" ! Some good links to get you started are (URL removed by moderator)

You can play the 'Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy' game online at Douglas Adams website [URL removed by moderator]

That brings back many memories. I never did finish that "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". One great feature was that a "Don't Panic" badge came with it.

Hello,
Topical and apropos - apparently a group of MIT students just released a study of Infocom's rise and fall. The study took two months and attempts to do a fair analysis of the company behind the games (if the story on Slashdot is accurate). If you're interested, you can check it out at (URL removed by moderator) The presentation of the paper is also available at (URL removed by moderator)
WARNING: They are both rather big, and the papers might get mirrored to better locations in the future (ie, check for other locations if you decide to reference them).
Anyway, good entry. I like it. My only minor suggestion is to make the GameTitles subheaders (enclose them in the tag). It would make them a bit more visible.
Yours,
Jake

If the game you are talking about is "Hitchhiker's Guide", you will need a painkiller to kill that hangover before you can get outside. Look around, look in things, examine everything in sight.

Hitchhiker's Guide was one of the last text adventure games I played - I still remember most of the puzzles, if you get stuck...

BTW: not to spoil the game, but you might want to feed a hungry little canine that might be wandering around the pub...

Gracias, Jake - the article has actually helped me make my entry a little more accurate. I wasn't sure of the chronology of these events - even after looking at as many internet sites as I could. Nobody seemed to have all the facts... except for these guys.

No problem, Lentilla. It's a truly excellent entry. It made me all nostalgic. Of course, you don't mention the favorite game at MIT ("Lurking Horror"), but it really wasn't one of the more popular ones, so I'll let it slide.
Incidentally, there seems to be another entry on Infocom, but I don't think it's as good. Still, I wonder what the procedure on that might be.
Yours,
Jake

Lentilla (Keeper of Non-Sequiturs) Posted Dec 27, 2000
There seems to be a virtually unlimited number of fish dispensed from the babel fish machine... so play with it. You have lots of items in your possession, including (I hope!) some junk mail from your front doorstep. And you might have to take off an item of clothing... Good luck! Let me know if you need a stronger nudge.
