Thank you. smiley - smiley

I wondered about linking (at least to the quotes I included). After all, it's not likely that they'll be removed. Do you know of an entry where it has been done before?

I considered the h2g2 (and BBC-wide?) U16 user ban, I know some have left the site (and I'm not referring to the U16s here) because of it.

To be honest, without the Stretcher I would never have thought of writing an entry about this, and put it into PR at that. smiley - biggrin

The oddest example of this I've found is that while you can write nuts, you can't write "nuts" in quotes. smiley - huh (Unless this goes through, in which case it's been changed since it happened...)

"I've seen the PF referred to in conversations as the 'filther' though I can't remember which h2g2 worthy coined the term." I doubt that many would consider me to be an 'h2g2 worthy' , but, as far as I know, I was the one to coin the word 'filther' [please see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F55683?thread=2604825&skip=320&show=20 'Discussions pertaining to the Profanity Filter on h2g2' Posting 329 8th April, 2006]. I'm not particularly proud of it, so I don't intend to search for an earlier example... unless anyone wishes to challenge my claim .

Thanks for the link, Rudi. I've gone back a bit to look for earlier mentions of 'filther', and I found this: A10606600

I've now added the following:

However, this being 'hootooAn endearment for h2g2.', one Researcher soon came up with a 'sewr word lexicon idea, the The h2g2 Profanisaurus. Even now (January 2009), people still post suggestions to it.

On which page? The swear words lexicon? It would only appear there if you posted suggesting it. And it's not really a swear word, or intended as one, is it?

I remember this tripping me up some time back. It was the paedo word but it took me a while to find that out. Got round it by replacing one of the vowels with an asterisk. It didn't seem to make much sense at the time. I can't remember coming across anyone effing and blinding on h2g2, but if they wanted to make sure that nobody did, why stop them discussing valid issues - like child protection?

A flipping good read, Anne. Well donesmiley - ok

Nit picking seems an unwholesome habit, but no-one should notice if I'm quick:

>>There may well be some unspecific fear be the underlying reason for the strong dislike, though.<<

Could do with a little adjustment, and

>>An endearment for h2g2<<

Should that be "a term of endearment"?

Thanks for that, Tibley. Yes, I remembered the paedophile issue well. Funny thing was, you didn't even need the *, just omitting the 'a' did the trick. Maybe they wanted to force us to write the US variant? smiley - tongueincheek

I'll go and amend accordingly. It's annoying, the things you miss first while writing, then proofreading your own writing. You hardly ever miss them in somebody else's writing. smiley - rolleyes

Hi, Merry Anne! smiley - smiley

I agree that 'filther' is not a swearword, and I am not suggesting that it is.

I claimed in Posting 30 to have been the one to coin the word, and challenged anyone to come up with an earlier example.

When you responded with, "I've gone back a bit to look for earlier mentions of 'filther', and I found this: A10606600", I thought you'd found an example, posted by another Researcher, predating mine.

You might have noticed that no one else has come forward to claim the honour. smiley - winkeye

After I found the 'lexicon' I was too distracted to search any further. As far as I'm concerned, your claim is fine. I'm not surprised nobody else has spoken up, though, I don't think this is the forum to attract the masses. smiley - biggrin
