because it is a very old man the command was written a long time before the bash shell, so the clash was never spotted.

Because it has nothing to do with women at all! Abbreviation of "manual" which is a word derived from "manus" meaning hand.
Yes, the language is inherently sexist. Find me one that's not and I'll... err... be very surprised.
