For years now TPTB have put off coming up with a mechanism for researchers to put Photos on Personal space. they always have some excuse. Now it appears a few individuals like U76 have been allowed photos. I left a message on Richard's Message center three days ago asking how he rates this special treatment. To this day he has not answered me. Years ago we started a society within h2g2 called the
SATS. It took a year to convince the tower that they needed to pay more attention to what the rank and file wanted. Maybe it is time to start a new group. Perhaps PEPTO the People for Equal Photographic Treatment Organisation. Would anybody be willing to join?

Richard get special treatment because he is one of the original owners of h2g2 along with Douglas Adams. He wrote a very interesting set of entries about his adventures driving from London to New York without using any boats, trains or planes. As part of this, a picture of him was added to the h2g2 archives, which he then used as a picture on his personal space. You could do the same if you managed to get a photograph of yourself to appear in the Post.

A two-digit U number is only allocated to people closely associated with the founding and running of the site. As far as I know us muggins have 5, 6 and 7 digit U numbers. Also, he hasn't posted to H2G2 for a year, so no surprise that he didn't answer your question...

Crossing the Atlantic without using Boats or planes that is a good trick. I still say that since he is no longer a member of staff that the photo should be removed. This would be a considered matter of equality. As to the post Shazz knows my name. But I have never tried to send him anything with a photo in it.

Well by that token we should get rid of the photo of Douglas Adams. He was a founder just like Richard and the lazy sod hasn't posted in almost 4 years
Oh, and Shazz is a girlie not a bloke

Well DNA (U42) is no longer a member of staff - should we get rid of his photo too?
Its up to the staff what pictures they want to load up onto H2G2, they're not breaking any laws or house rules.
What other bans would you like to put in place to ensure everything remains equal?

Ouch, sorry GD, simulpost - I think we were saying the same thing...

Shagbark, once the photo is in the database, there's no reason why Richard shouldn't use it. It certainly shouldn't be removed just because he is no longer anything to do with h2g2.

At the end of the day, we can all link to photos elsewhere. Also if you like h2g2 then why not a bit of respect for the founders of it?

I have respect for the founder of it. I did not like losing my space as hickory and having to start over as shagbark when the BBC bought out h2g2. I understand RHIP. I certainly don't have the requisites for a 20,000 KM trek across the world. (Although as hickory I contributed the first article to h2G2 on Antarctica after my visit there).

Richard didn't cross the Atlantic. He went via the channel tunnel and the Bering Straits ice floe.
Shagbark, we are all equal here. You can have a photo of adventurer Richard on your home page too if you want.

I'll address the question at the end of your post first...
"Perhaps PEPTO the People for Equal Photographic Treatment Organisation. Would anybody be willing to join? "
Would I be willing to work towards ordinary users being able to post their own photos on the site? Yes!
Given the tone of your first post, would I want to work with you?
NOT A RUDDY CHANCE!
Sorry, you may not have meant it, but your postings come across as incredibly arrogant and sounds like my six year old throwing a temper tantrum...
Reactive Moderation... Links in Conversations... All have been achieved through patient and polite work by researchers with the support of the staff... Barging onto the personal space of one of the site's founders and wingeing or posting your 'demands' to this thread is not likely to get you anywhere...

I understand now that Richard took the long way around over the bearing strates. And I have admitted that I don't have what it takes for such a long trek. but he himself admitted that he flew in a light plane from Little diomede to Wales so this business about not taking any planes is not necessarily so.

1. Attend a meet or do something extraordinary.
2. Take photos.
3. Write a meetup report for and submit some of said photos with it. If you're lucky some *may* get used. It's happened before so it could happen again as long as you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Here's an example: A493706 and thirty odd other pages from a bygone era (AKA the November 2000 London meet).
